Book Description
Excerpt from A Trip to St. Petersburg My Dear John, You kindly expressed a wish, to hear how our party fared in undertaking such a long journey in the dead of winter; and so, in compliance with your request, I send you a few "jottings by the way," which I trust may interest you and our friends at home, although you must expect them to be very incoherent, and not be surprised to find that I run in my thoughts up and down the line, backwards or forwards, some odd thousand miles or so, to describe something, which occurred at some time, somewhere. St. Petersburg sounds a long way off; and so it is; overland above two thousand miles, by Calais, Brussels, Cologne, Berlin, Kowno, Wilna, and Pskof; but our time has passed so pleasantly, in such agreeable society, with so much comfort and convenience, that on our arrival here, after five days and five nights' journey, two nights of which were passed in beds and three in railway carriages, we found ourselves, after warm baths and a nice little supper, quite prepared to start again if necessary. Book Description
Excerpt from A Journey to St. Petersburg and Moscow Through Courland and Livonia The desert became still more desolate, and the wind began to moan with that strange unearthly sound which it has in lonely places, over tracts of snow or sand. To the left, the wilderness was bound in by the distant Baltic as with a girdle, only distinguishable from the sky, with which it mingled, by its deeper blue. Every where else fields of sand and morass extended to the verge of the horizon. This apparently was a neutral ground between the two countries; and it was with no small degree of curiosity that I awaited my introduction into Russia. Book Description
Excerpt from A Fortnight in St. Petersburg The Arctic Zone. The rays of its warlike glory stream to the zenith with a fiery splendor, the pathos of its oppres sion and its tragedies quivers and trem bles like the paler tints which die away upon the wintry sky. There is a similar mystery about its origin and growth, about its people and their heroes, about its cli mate and its landscape, its mythic put 8: its incalculable future. Among its many enigmas, its northern capital is by no means the least. Built in the brain of a monarch before its first foundations were laid, insisted upon by him in spite of the opposition of nature and the sullen nu willingness ot man - conceived upon a plan that requires centuries for its develop. Book Description
Excerpt from St. Petersburg The Author, Mr. G. Dobson, who was for many years correspondent of the T imes in St. Petersburg, aims at giving as complete an account of the Russian capital as could possibly be contained within the comparatively small compass of the present volume. The following chapters accord ingly include the history of the origin of St. Petersburg, an explanation of the political ideas and objects connected with it, a critical descrip tion of the city as it appears to-day and as it impressed other writers in earlier years, and sketches of the life and types of its inhabitants. Some little attention has also been given to a somewhat neglected part of the story of its origin, that is to say, to the state of affairs in this region long before the time of Peter the Great, which rendered the creation of such a settled basis on the Neva a vital necessity for Russia's progress on European lines. Book Description
Excerpt from Russia and the Russians: Or, a Journey to St. Petersburg and Moscow, Through Courland and Livonia; With Characteristic Sketches of the People We at len th reached a solitary habitation, apparently a toll-house. 'he bar, painted with the royal colours, black and white, was raised. N 0 one appeared either to exact dues, or to question the passer-by as to his whereabout; but the coachman stopped at the door, and took in my passport. In a minute or two he returned and we resumed our journey, and I found that I had passed through one of the entrance or exit gates of Prussia. Book Description
Excerpt from From Peking to Petersburg The record of this journey through Asia does not claim to be a tale of adventure. Although I have travelled a good deal, I am no explorer. I am the average indoors man, and for that reason the story of my journey may correct some misapprehensions. There are many to be corrected. Thus, when I arranged to travel through the continent of Asia, from Peking to St. Petersburg, and told my friends of what I proposed to do, they said I should leave that kind of thing to explorers. People thought that I was about to enter on a difficult and hazardous undertaking, and no one quite believed me when I predicted that the journey would involve no risk and little hardship. Book Description
Excerpt from Pictures From St. Petersburg, Vol. 1 of 2 Upon tlie whole, Mr. Jerrmann rather approves than blames the ji esent order of things in that country, which he considers to be in a transition state of steady but slow improvement - the more satisfactory because slow. He does not, however, dogmatically contend for the soundness of his opinions, but will apparently be well content if his readers credit the facts with which he furnishes them, thereupon to form their own judgment. Thus much can hardly be refused to a writer who, although hitherto unknown in England, is evidently shrewd and intelligent, Avhose veracity ve have no grounds to call in question, and to whom we are certainly indebted for a highly interesting book.
