Book Description
AN ABANDONED ROAD There is a path now where once there was a road Where smooth brown earth and jaded rocks Fell away in deep depression The trail of wheels and neighing horses and of lighter walks It grows thick and tall, the grass that was once held at bay Dared not to rise where tramping feet would crush But staged on edge where cruel ungainly winds Vent their wrath unceasingly with rain and dust It has conquered now, for slowly the grinding ceased And the lighter steps dwindled with the laughter it had known It dared to rise between the ruts and bend To hide the scars from some stray steps that roam And intrude upon their sanctuary, where conquered winds Hold not the lash of yore, but with gentleness obey The lull moods of quiet rains, the brushed air That shrouds the stillness of an abandoned road

English Women's Poetry, 1649-1714
Author: Carol Barash
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198119739
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
This study reconstructs the political origins of English women's poetry between the execution of Charles I and the death of Queen Anne. Based on extensive archival research in England and the United States, Barash argues that ideas about women's voices and women's communities were crucial to the shaping of an English national literature after the civil wars. Women entered print culture--as poets and as women--by situating their writing in defence of embattled monarchy. In particular, Barash points to women poets' fascination with the figure of the female monarch (both real and mythic). Their sense of poetic legitimacy derives from the communities they generate around figures of female authority, particularly James II's second wife, Mary of Modena, and later Queen Anne. Writers discussed include Aphra Behn, Katherine Philips, Anne Killigrew, Jane Barker, and Anne Finch.
