Excerpt from A Treatise on Zoology, Vol. 1: Introduction and Protozoa There are certain matters which require brief treatment by way of introduction to the present treatise on Zoology. The first concerns the limitation of the subject-matter indicated by the term Zoology," requiring a statement of what living things arc here considered .os animals and what are excluded from that title. The second concerns the grouping of animals in large series corresponding to the indications afforded by their structure as to their genetic affinities. Tho method adopted in the present work has been to take large divisions of the Animal scries such as are often called " sub-kingdoms " or " phyla " (or in some instances less comprehensive divisions) one by one for systematic description and for more detailed enumeration and justification of the classes, orders, and families recognised than is usual in handbooks of Zoology. These large divisions have been assigned for treatment to separate authors, and in each case the author has given a description of the characters which justify the recognition of the group which he treats as an independent series; to this he has added a more extended discussion of the rauge of variety in the structure of the fortns held to be reasonably considered as members of the series. A special chapter written by me forms the introduction to volume ii. of this work. It may bo regarded as a continuation of the present chapter, and treats of the division of the higher grade of animals, which is called the Metazoa (tho lower being the Protozoa), into two branches, the "Parazoa" and the "Enterozoa." It is, however, chiefly occupied with a discussion of the division of the Entcrozoa into two grades of higher and lower structural complexity, which are designated respectively the "Enterocoela" and "Coelomocoela." The chief phyla or large branches of the animal pedigree arc there enumerated, whilst each is subsequently treated by independent authors. Excerpt from The Protozoa The Protozoa not only claim the interest of the professional naturalist, but also that of a wider circle of nature students who, with the aid of the microscope, have always found here a fascinating field for observation and research.. In writing the present volume, embodying a summary of the more recent discoveries concerning these minute animals, I have aimed to keep in mind the needs of the latter class of naturalists, as well as those who search more deeply in the unicellular organisms for the solution of many morpho logical problems which. Remain unsolved in the higher animals, or for vital processes which afford a transition from the manifestations of life in its simplest expression to life as seen in the lower forms of invertebrates. The subject-matter of the volume is treated from three points of view: (i) The historical. To which the first chapter is devoted. (2) The comparative, to which five chapters are given: one to the group of Protozoa as a whole, the other four to the main classes. (3) The general, to which three chapters are devoted. One of these is given to the phenomena of old age or senile degeneration in Protozoa and renewal of youth through the union of two individuals, and to the bearing of these phenomena upon sexual reproduction in general. Another is given to the special structures of nuclei and centrosomes of the Protozoa; this, the most technical chapter in the book, is introduced because of the growing importance which the Protozoa have in the problems of cellular biology, especially with those dealing with the origin of the division-centre and its aecom panying structures in the cells of the Metazoa. The last chapter is devoted to a consideration of the physiology of the Protozoa, with especial reference to the Protozoa as organisms endowed with the powers of coordination and of adaptation, which up to the present time have eluded physical and chemical analysis.
