Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Medical and Surgical Diseases of Women History renders it certain that the Egyptians studied upon medical subjects, but with our present knowledge of the records left from that age of the world, we have no data from which to estimate the extent or accuracy of their knowledge. Nor are we able, with our acquaintance with Hebrew literature, to determine that any considerable amount of knowledge pertaining to this especial class of diseases was at that time in existence. With the advent of Hippocrates, 400 B. There seems to have been a revival of all that pertains to medical sub jects, and he especially seems to have made a careful study of the subject from actual dissections of the human body, and so far as our present information extends, he was the first to treat of the diseases of women in a methodical man ner. Precisely how much advancement was made during the next thousand years, it is only possible to surmise by the incidental cropping out of information in the extant writings of that day, that a uterine sound and specula were used, two inventions, or reproductions of very modern date.14 introduction. From the ruins of Pompeii was exhumed a bivalve speculum, an instrument only generally known in later times, after its introduction by Recamier in 1801, although alluded to as early as 1640 by Ambrose Pare. Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Gynecology: A Treatise on the Diseases of Women From the Standpoint of the Physician The growth of gynecology in recent times has been phenomenal, especially in the direction of surgery. That in this respect its progress should have been remarkable is not surprising, in view of the great advances made in general surgical knowledge during that period. It appears in medical literature that surgery has been more assiduously cultivated than medicine. This may have induced some to push the surgical treatment of diseases of women to extremes, and in some degree to neglect medicine. On the other hand, physicians, who have been overconfident in their art, may have failed occasionally to do surgery full justice. This is evidently responsible for the frequent and often illogical discussions which have been going on in the past few years regarding so-called radical and conservative practice in gynecology. The science and art of medicine and surgery in their highest development should be above all party questions, and those who place a just estimate on both branches of the healing art, and employ them without predilection and prejudice, are the most successful and reliable. Unreasonable devotion to either medicine or surgery is wrong. A consciousness on the part of the author of this status of gynecology is responsible for the inception and genesis of this work. How far he may be right in thinking that there is room for a new work on the medical branch of gynecology, and to what extent the requirements have been met in this volume, the members of the medical profession alone can decide. Book Description
Excerpt from A Clinical History of the Medical and Surgical Diseases of Women The First Edition of this work has been long exhausted. I have not on that account hurried the preparation of this Second Edition. The book has been subjected to conscientious revision. It is hoped that some of its defects have been either removed or lessened. By pruning redundancies, and by re-arrangement, space has been gained for the addition of new matter. The size of the book is not increased yet room has been found for a new Chapter on the Relations of Bladder and Bowel Disorders to the proper subject-matter of the book. Many new illustrations have been added. I think it not unimportant to state, that I have given under every borrowed illustration the source whence it was taken. The illustrations contributed by myself are indicated by my initials. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the execution of this labor, the author has endeavored to discard all sectarianism, to investigate impartially the different systems of me dicine, and to record the well-attested principles and practice of the entire profession, including the application of all such new agents as have stood the test of a thorough clinical experience. Many of the agents recommended in the management of disease are not found in the regular pharmacopoeia, but are fully described by the author in his work upon New School Medicines, as well as by others who have written upon the recent improvements in the materia medica. In the preparation of the work, the author has availed himself, not only of the observations and experience of his predecessors and cc temporaries, but of such additional facts as twenty-five years' ex tensive practice has enabled him to accumulate. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases of Women: For Students and Practitioners This book is the natural outgrowth of the author's Diagnosis of Diseases of Women. Much that was contained in the former work has been revised, the subjects have been reclassified, and more than an equal amount of text and illustrations has been added for the purpose of making a complete text-book on the subject of diseases of women. It has been the endeavor of the author to present the subject in detail without encumbering the text with needless repetitions. With this object in View, separate chapters are devoted to the subjects of N on operative Methods of Treatment, Hygiene and Dress, Preparation of Patient for Operation, Preparation of Operating Room, Field of Operation and Surgical Utensils, Choice of Anesthetics, Diet, Post operative Complications and Care of Patients after Operation, and frequent references are made to these subjects throughout the text. An effort has been made to give full scope to the discussion of conservative methods of treatment, such as douches, baths, exercise, massage, diet, dress, and tampons. The author is of the opinion that the non-operative methods of treatment of diseases of women have not received their due share of consideration In text-books and in practice which they rightly deserve. The subject of diagnosis has been placed on an anatomical basis, both macroscopic and microscopic, for' it is preeminently true of diseases of women that the making of a diagnosis is in large part the recognition of the morbid anatomy.
