Excerpt from A Treatise on the Faith and Influence of the Gospel But see we proceed, let us, in explanation of the term faith, advert to the wide distinction which obtains between the popular imagination of what it is, and the Apostle's definition of what it is. The common conception about it is, that it consists in a correct apprehension of the truths of theology uor soundness of belief as opposed to error of belief. It appears to be a very prevalent isnpres. M that faith lies in our judging rightly of the doctrines of the Bible - or that we have a proper understanding of them. And, in this way, the pri vileges annexed to faith in the New Testament, are very apt to be regarded as a sort of remuneration for the soundness of our orthodoxy. Heaven is viewed as a kind of reward, if not for the worth of our doings, at least for the worth and the justness of our dog mats. Under the old economy, eternal life was held out as a return to us for right practice. Under the new economy, is it conceived by many, that it is held out to us as a return for right thinking. Figure two theologians to be listed, the one against the other, in controversy. He who espouses error is estimated to be a heretic, and wanting in the faith. He who espouses truth, is estimated to be a sound believer, so that his faith resolves itself into the accuracy of his creed. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. Excerpt from The Gospel and Its Tributaries My aim in the book has been to indicate how Chris tianity drew into itself many tributary elements, and in so doing transformed them, so that the result was not some nondescript composite religion, but a new and in some ways more adequate expression of the message of Jesus. The survey is limited to the period covered by the New Testament. My first intention was to extend it to the time of the Council of Nicaea, for it was in the second and third centuries that the fusion of Christian belief with contemporary thought was carried fully into effect. In that first century the gospel was formulated, the forces which were to modify it came definitely into play, the task which lay before it was clearly envisaged.
