Excerpt from Diseases of the Tongue Ever since I have been a member of the staff of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, I have used the opportunities which the large out-patient practice of the Hospital has given me of collecting notes and drawings of diseases of the tongue. I did not do so at first with any definite intention of publishing them, and certainly not with any intention of writing a work on Diseases of the Tongue. When, however, I was asked by Messrs. Cassell and Company to undertake this task, I accepted, on account of the opportunity it afforded me of bringing my material before the profession much more thoroughly than would probably have been the case had I published the book independently. In addition to my own cases, I have had the advantage of observing many cases under the care of my colleagues in the Hospital, and have even been permitted to have drawings made of those which I desired. Some of these drawings have been lithographed; but the very large majority of the illustrations have been taken from cases which have been under my own care. When Sir James Paget learned what work I was engaged in, he was good enough to interest himself in it so far as to look out for me his manuscript notes of several cases, among them one of tuberculous ulcer of the tongue taken about thirty years ago. Excerpt from The Tongue as an Indication in Disease: Being the Lumleian Lectures Delivered at the Royal College of Physicians in March 1888 These Lectures are published as delivered, with only a few alterations, chiefly verbal. I had intended to have begun them with a brief notice of what had been written on the subject of which they treat, but was compelled by the pressure of other matters to limit myself to the few necessary references which are to be found in the text. I now prefix such a sketch as I had designed. It does not pretend to exhaust the literature of the subject, but rather to give specimens of the views held at different times. The condition of the tongue has not escaped observation even from the earliest, though the allusions made to it are often fragmentary and incomplete. I have been disappointed to find how many and how great medical observers, whose minds must have been stored with pictures of the tongue. Excerpt from Treatise on the Diseases of the Eye, Including the Anatomy of the Organ The time has certainly come when a complete and acceptable treatise on the diseases of the eye, including its minute anatomy, will be cordially received by the American medical profession. We hope that the translation of Professor Stellwag's book, herewith presented, may prove to be such a work. Doubtless a compilation adapted more especially to the professional habit of thought in England and the United States, would have some advantages over a work originally prepared for medical men speaking another tongue. But we have believed that the present work presented sufficient advantages to outweigh any such objections to it. Moreover, without disregarding the great assistance rendered by English and French surgeons, we must consider the present advanced position of ophthalmology as due, in a great measure, to the labors of the Germans. Under these circumstances, it seems just to recognize this fact by presenting a text-book which is regarded as one of the best in the German language. We had nearly finished a translation of the second edition, when the author informed us that a third was in preparation. The changes and additions were so many, that we found it necessary to begin our work anew, and we accordingly translated this third edition from advance sheets sent by the author. Thus our labors as translators were greatly increased, but on the other hand we found very little to do as editors. Our work has been conscientiously performed, and yet, undoubtedly, many imperfections will be found, for which we ask the indulgence of the profession.
