Book Description
Excerpt from The Ear: Its Anatomy, Physiology, and Diseases; A Practical Treatise for the Use of Medical Students and Practitioners IN view of the great advances which have been made of late years in Otology, and of the increasing interest manifested in it, the Author has felt that the profession might welcome a new work, which should present clearly but concisely its present aspect, and should indicate the direction in which further researches can be most profitably carried on. Such a work it has been the Author's aim to produce, and in accomplishing the task it will be seen that he has freely availed himself of the observations and discoveries of others. These he has, as far as practicable, tested by his own experience in the Opportunities afforded by several years' special devotion to the study of the diseases of the ear. Considerable practice in teaching has shown him that the pathology and therapeutics of the ear cannot be properly under stood without a more intimate acquaintance with its anatomy and physiology than is afforded by the ordinary text-books. In these departments much important work has recently been done abroad, especially in Germany, and the author is confident that the space which he has devoted to their consideration will not be considered as excessive. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of the Ear, Including a Sketch of Aural Anatomy and Physiology In this edition, certain changes and additions have been made, which it is hoped will increase the value of the book. Such additions will be especially observed, in the discussion of the relation of diseases of the nose and throat to the ear, the value of operations upon the drum-head and ossicles, as well as in the history and practice of operations upon the mastoid. Minor changes have also been made in many parts of the book, and a new and more complete index has been made by Dr. Frank N. Lewis. The last edition was translated into German by Dr. Ludwig Weiss, and published in Berlin by August Hirschwald. The author sincerely hopes that his book may continue to find readers, not only among students of medicine, but among practitioners as well, for, although otology has made great strides in the last decade, it still lags behind many departments of our science and art, in the estimation and knowledge of the profession at large. Even among specialists, who are devoted to otology and fields not remote from it, a wider knowledge of what has been done for diseases of the ear, would sometimes be of service in lessening the quantity of literature upon well discussed themes. I therefore hope that this book may not be anywhere considered as an elementary work, suitable only for undergraduates in medicine. In many parts it consists rather of a series of monographs intended for specialists as well as for general practitioners.
