Excerpt from A Treatise on Applied Anatomy IN undertaking a work upon Applied Anatomy my object has been to provide an account of the regional anatomy of the human body in its more important applications to Medicine and Surgery. It has been my conviction for many years that the subject of anatomy might with advantage be taught to students of medicine more from the applied standpoint and less as an abstract science. Some years ago, at the instigation of Professor Cunningham, a course of lectures in Applied Anatomy was made obligatory in the Medical School of Trinity College, and has been productive of the most gratifying results. Were anatomical teaching conducted more generally on these lines, it would, I have no doubt, help to bridge over the wide gap which separates the dissecting room from the surgical theatre, and render the transition from the one to the other less abrupt; the subject would possess more attraction for the student, it would be more easily remembered, and certainly more useful. Although I have endeavoured to treat the subject of Applied Anatomy in a general way, yet, in the main, the book is surgical; indeed, in some respects its scope might have been more correctly expressed by giving it the title Surgery from the Anatomical Standpoint. The general plan adopted in the arrangement of the text is one which I have found by experience most popular with students in the lecture theatre. Each region is introduced by a concise account of its topographical anatomy, developmental details being supplied where necessary, and subsequently the more important lessons - medical, surgical, and pathological - which are to be derived from it are presented for consideration. Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Human Anatomy As indicated by its title, the present work is intended as an elementary treatise on human anatomy, and is not an elaborate system adapted to the use of those who have already advanced in anatomical knowledge. The author has attempted to prepare such a book as he feels would have been of service to himself in the commencement of his studies, and he hopes it may be found worthy of the approbation of students, for whom, and by whose frequent solicitation, it was written. Much of the difficulty, of which we hear constant complaint, in the acquisition and retention of anatomical knowledge, arises from an excessive, and, in some other respects, objectionable nomenclature. Not only has' the naming of comparatively unimportant parts been carried to an extreme, but, in numerous instances, the same parts are designated by a multitude of names, which are indiscriminately used by different writers. The nomenclature of anatomy has been founded on no particular system; the names having been chosen, according to the fancy of anatomists, from the shape, function, or supposed resemblance of the part, or in commemoration of the original investigator. Excerpt from Clinical Applied Anatomy: Or the Anatomy of Medicine and Surgery In 1862 there appeared a work which is now classical, "Rest and Pain," by John Hilton. In the preparation of the present volume we have endeavored to follow, in some degree, the lines suggested by that author, and to indicate the important influence of Anatomy on the incidence and progress of disease, disorder, and injury of the human body. We are fully conscious that we have but inadequately fulfilled the task we have imposed upon ourselves. There are many omissions; and explanations are not always so complete or convincing as we could desire. We have aimed throughout at keeping the book within reasonable limits, and have avoided the inclusion of highly controversial points. So many excellent treatises on Applied Anatomy have made their appearance of recent years that it might be thought that there was neither room nor necessity for another. The present work, however, differs from these in that it deals with the purely clinical side of the subject, and is written from a practitioner's rather than an anatomist's point of view. Hence all anatomical points which are not essential are omitted. The anatomy of surgical procedures, which is already amply detailed in various manuals of operative surgery, is purposely passed over. We trust that the book will prove of service to the senior student and to the practitioner, and show that Systematic Anatomy has not yet said its last word in the education of the clinician.
