Book Description
Excerpt from A Technical Description of the Engineering Building The beams of the basement floor measure each 11 inches by 18, those of the first floor 10 inches by 18, those of the second 7 inches by 16, and those above 6 inches by 16, and those of the roof 6 inches by 14. There are no boilers in this building, the steam for heating and for power is brought from the boilers in the basement of the Rogers Building, about a thousand feet away, through a six-inch pipe buried under ground. The pipe is first wrapped in asbestos, and for further insulation it is inserted in a wooden log. The heating system is partly direct and partly indirect, and with the indirect part ventilation is obtained by means of a Sturtevant blower. Nearly all the radiators have automatic valves, the tempera ture of the room regulating the steam supply to the radiator. In connection with the heating should be mentioned that the window sashes of the north, east, and west sides of the building, and also a large skylight on the roof measuring 80 by 16 feet, lighting the upper draughting room, are double glazed, making a great saving in the expenditure of heat. The exterior design is very simple, all effect being obtained by the principle of construction. The solid basement from which rises the long buttresses or pilasters, connected at the top by semi-circular arches, and the upper story with, its thinner wall forming an attic, describes the, design. And it is effective enough; it tells its story truly. The material is rough brick with a small amount of Long Meadow stone trimmings. A heavy block granite foundation rests on 725 piles, averaging 40 feet long. All the heavy machinery in the basement have their piled foundations distinct from that of the building. Book Description
Excerpt from Engineering Societies Building During the past twenty years, the project has Historical been frequently discussed and agitated of bring ing together in one building, with proper facilities for offices, library, auditorium, meeting rooms, etc., the various engi neering societies that make their headquarters in New York City. References to the idea may be found in various transactions and technical journals as far back as the early eighties, for even then the: desirability of such accommodation had already become a topic of conversation among engineers. As a matter of fact, however, the process of society formation was then still quite active, and the ten dencies were centrifugal; although with the creation of each new body, the difficulties as to headquarters increased very rapidly. The societies, old and new, all grew apace, acquired valuable property in books, furniture, relics, etc., but in general, had to content them selves with rental of small private houses or rooms therein, subject to loss by fire and to other grave inconveniences. In 1895, an actual plan for such a joint home was submitted to Mr. Andrew Carnegie by Mr. W. D. Weaver, a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, who received a reply of warm approval and commendation. Others are understood to have made suggestions later of the same nature. In February, 1903, Mr. Carnegie as one of the contributors to the library fund of that Institute, was invited to attend its Library Dinner, and after four declinations on account of inability to arrange a date, accepted. The dinner was given on February 9, at Sherry's, when Mr. Carnegie spoke on co-operation among engineers. The President of the Institute told of its growth and the need of a building for engineer ing societies. The next day Mr. Carnegie sent for Mr. C. F. Scott, president of the Institute, and Mr. Calvin W. Rice, chairman of its building committee, and discussed with them broadly the idea of a union engineering building. He said that a scheme of that kind should embrace the social as well as the technical interests of engi neering. His attention was called to the fact that the Engineers' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Chemistry for Engineers and Manufacturers, Vol. 1: Chemisrty of Engineering, Building, and Metallurgy IN writing the present book the authors have had chiefly in view the needs of Practising Engineers, Managers of Works, and Technical Students desirous of obtaining some knowledge of Chemical Technology. In a book of this scope, lengthy descriptions of plant and of processes which differ from each other merely in detail would be out of place. For this reason, only such processes are described as are typical of the class to which they belong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Building Estimator The illustrations. Are mostly taken from local sources, but I have had a wide enough experience to draw a fair average of time required on all kinds of work. In addition to an apprenticeship on the other side of the Atlantic, and another apprenticeship as a contractor in the West, I spent three years in the city of New York, and half as long in each of the western capitals - Chicago and St. Louis. This much to satisfy those who read the preface that the book was not compiled by a the orist. No matter where work is done, if it is done right there is not such a great amount of difference in the time required. For the last three years I have been in the Chief Engineer's office of the Union Pacific Railroad making plans and estimates for shops, etc. The old saying runs, If you want to find out how little you know of a subject, write about it. No one can be more sensible than I of how far this comes short of being an ideal book, and yet it is much better than it would have been bad the railroad experience not been added to the total, as that showed larger quantities handled on another class of work than falls to the average contractor. Doctor Johnson, the dictionary man, used to pride himself on his prefaces, for in them he explained how a book should be written, and why it was impossible so to write it. The Engineering News in a recent complaint over the dearth of technical books written by practical men forgot to mention, among other reasons for the deficiency, that the perspective looks so much better than the building as to induce a feeling of discouragement. And yet, it is better that it is so; for all men and railroads, all arts and sciences, and most books, like trees, must grow or rot. If, therefore, while there is much here that is not elsewhere, you meet the common fault of such works - a lack of some thing that ought to be shown in capital letters - it is to be regarded not so much as a blemish, as a sign that progress is still possible, and as a flattering invitation to try your skill as an author and make two words grow where only one grew before.
