Accounts of each species include synonymy, nymphal description, collection records, and a distribution map. The 31 species described and keyed include three new species, four new synonyms, two resurrected species, and new combinations involving three additional species and subspecies. Twelve species and one subspecies are classified as intolerant of organic pollution, eight species as tolerant of mild pollution, and seven species and two subspecies as tolerant to moderate pollution.

Running waters are enormously diverse, ranging from torrential mountain brooks, to large lowland rivers, to great river systems whose basins occupy subcontinents. While this diversity makes river ecosystems seem overwhelmingly complex, a central theme of this volume is that the processes acting in running waters are general, although the settings are often unique.
