Book Description
Excerpt from A Syllabus of a Course on Elementary Woodworking The course in Elementary Woodworking, as given at Teachers College, aims to give the student three main opportunities: I. For the acquisition of skill in the handling of woodworking tools; II. For practice in designing simple projects in wood; III. For insight into the methods and problems of woodwork in the school("Manual Training") shop. I. In the following pages the outline of only the first of these objects is sketched: namely, a practicable method of procedure in the acquisition of skill. It will be noted that the course here outlined is so planned that: 1. A variety of woods is employed, each appropriate for its particular project. They are cypress, whitewood, maple, white pine, mahogany, chestnut, hickory, sweet gum, oak, and black walnut. 2. In general, the technical processes involved increase in difficulty through the series, but aesthetic considerations are not sacrificed to this formula. 3. Several types of construction are employed, involving such joints as end-lap, rubbed, miter, middle-cross-lap, doweled butt, mortise-and-tenon, and ledge. 4. A few simple processes in copper working are included because their employment considerably extends the range of useful and ornamental projects available. 5. A variety of finishes is suggested, including several methods of staining, as well as the use of such polishes as oil, wax, and shellac. In a word, the course involves a considerable variety of experience in technical processes. It is impossible, however, in these few pages to describe adequately fine points of technique. For some of these, references are made throughout the text to the author's books, "Hand Work in Wood" and "Studies in Wood, Design and Construction." In the former book will also be found an extended bibliography of other books on woodworking. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Problems in Elementary Woodworking: Graded for Instruction by the Group Method The usual practice in elementary manual training has been to omit all strictly exercise pieces. However, the author's experience has been that a preliminary exercise embracing the fundamental tools and proc esses at the beginning Of a course, while the interest is naturally fresh, is very helpful, insuring far better work than when it is omitted. In, fact, the exercise here given has been used by the author with splendid results at the beginning of every year in every course in hand woodworking, whether the pupil had previous experience or not. To say the least, a good exercise is a splendid brief review of tools and processes which form the basis for all later work. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Woodworking In order to obtain good results in the using of tools it is necessary to know their construction, how to pr0p erly sharpen and adjust them, and the correct method of handling them. It is also essential to know how to lay out and work the material or stock. Carelessness or a lack of knowledge is invariably followed by a failure. It is more important at first to work carefully and accurately than rapidly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Course in Woodwork: Designed for Use in High and Technical Schools, With One Hundred and Thirty-Four Illustrations The teeth of a hand-saw should be filed so true that on holding it up to the eye and looking along its edge, it will show a central groove down which a fine needle will slide freely the entire length. This groove must be angular in shape and equal on each side, or the saw is not filed properly and will not run true. Book Description
Excerpt from A Shorter Course in Woodworking: A Practical Manual for Home and School Teachers, parents, business men, and mechanics are demanding that the training of youth be more practical. A satisfactory system must meet the demands of the pupil or the individual student, that his interest and enthusiasm maybe so aroused as to call forth his best efforts; of the educator, that the subject may be presented to the pupil in the way best for his general development; of the mechanic, that the most practical methods may be adopted; and of the business man that the pupils be trained in up-to-date methods and modern ways of thinking. This book is not meant to conflict with courses in woodworking now in use, but rather to fit in with any system; for the approved methods of work - the result of the experience of. Generations of workmen - should be known to all teachers, pupils, and individual students. No set course of procedure can be adopted by all, nor is there any necessarily logical order in which many of the tools and Operations must be taken up, although some are naturally brought into use before others. Therefore the material in this book is so arranged that it can be used in any order, and any desired topic can be referred to readily. When class exercises are begun with oral and manual demonstra tions many pupils do not readily grasp and assimilate the new ideas, technical terms, and details during one demonstration by the teacher, and it is believed that a general manual which can be used as a text book and reference-book will be helpful and time-saving to both teacher and pupil.
