Book Description
Our knowledge of Ukrainian bark and ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) is summarized as a baseline for future studies of the fauna, with a checklist including information on distribution, host trees, biology and taxonomy. One hundred twenty-two species are recorded from Ukraine, of which seven are recorded for the first time. One species is recorded for the first time from Europe. Previous records of 24 species are considered dubious and requiring confirmation. In contrast to the Palaearctic Catalogue (Knížek 2011b), we consider Anisandrus maiche to be first described by Kurentsov (1941) rather than by Eggers (1942); A. maiche (Eggers, 1942) is a junior synonym of A. maiche(Kurentsov, 1941).

Traces of Common Xylophagous Insects in Wood
Author: Magali Toriti
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030663914
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 220
Book Description
This atlas presents a concrete tool to identify xylophagous activity by the remains they left in wooded areas in Western Europe. Xylophagous insects are among the largest predators of woody tissues. They leave discriminating traces, different for each species according to their bioecology, and so it is necessary to know how to recognize and characterize them. The book is a practical tool to help identify and interpret them through a standardized presentation of the most ubiquitous families and a key to their determination. It presents descriptions of the galleries and of morphometry of the faecal pellets based on macroscopic features for xylophagous identification, and includes information about the origin and distribution of the xylophagous biological cycles, bioclimatic conditions and bioecology, and the type of woods that are attacked. The book will be a useful guide for forest managers, heritage conservationists, environmental engineers, bioarchaeologists, entomologists, loggers, and wood anatomists.

Book Description
The Integrated pest management manual on pests of economic importance in Ukraine was prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU), under a regional project of FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme, aiming at strengthening the capacities of seven countries in the area of plant protection. This manual was developed in the context of the implementation of the activities of the project dedicated to strengthening the national capacities to protect from plant pests some of the most economically important crops in Ukraine. The manual helps in increasing awareness of the readers on the economically important pests in Ukraine, as well as on the methods of their control, taking into account not only the effectiveness of measures undertaken, but also the protection of natural environment and the health of consumers.

A Guide to the Beetles of Australia
Author: George Hangay
Publisher: CSIRO PUBLISHING
ISBN: 0643101934
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 249
Book Description
A Guide to the Beetles of Australia provides a comprehensive introduction to the Coleoptera – a huge and diverse group of insects. Beetles make up 40 per cent of all insects known to science. The number of described beetle species in the world – around 350 000 – is more than six times the number of all vertebrate species. New beetle species are being discovered all the time. Of the 30 000 species that may occur in Australia, only 20 000 have been scientifically described. These include around 6500 weevils (Curculionidae), 2600 scarabs, dung beetles and chafers (Scarabaeidae); and 2250 leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae). A Guide to the Beetles of Australia highlights the enormous diversity of this unique insect Order. It emphasises the environmental role of beetles, their relationships with other plants and animals, and their importance to humans. Winner of the 2010 Whitley Medal.
