The struck nucleus may (1) emit nucleons, (2) emit electromagnetic radiation, or (3) break up into two or more pieces. Since this dissertation is to deal exclusively with thermal neutron induced activities, the subject of gamma induced activities will not be mentioned further.

It is the primary aim of this research to present as complete an evaluation as possible of the gamma rays having energies up to 1.5 Mev that are emitted by the excited states of various nuclei. The use of enriched isotopes and the proximity of the source of activation make it possible to investigate both short and long-lived radioactivities produced by neutron bombardment of the elements considered. By measuring the internal conversion electron and photoelectron line spectra, one obtains the energies of all prominent gamma-rays to within plus or minus 0.3%. Some exceptionally weak transitions above 600 kev are best observed with a scintillation counter or Geiger counter at the expense of accuracy.

Neutron-induced radioactivities have been of great scientific interest since the discovery of the neutron in 1932. Most of the work that has been reported up to this time (1949) has been concerning long-lived activities has often not been with great accuracy. It was the purpose of this study to establish accurately the energies of several short-lived neutron-induced radioactivities. The method used in the present study will be described in detail after a brief survey of the several ways in which the energy of a gamma ray may be experimentally measured.
