Book Description
Excerpt from A Study in Corneille Translating a poem, like subjecting a flower to the Chemist's art, may preserve the perfume, but it must needs annihilate the form. It is thought, however, that to know Corneille in English may be better than not to know him at all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Corneille This picture illustrates among other things how fashionable the drama had become. We are in the centre of the great social world, and that world is absorbed in the stage. Whatever the play may be, one thing is certain, it is the work of some poet approved of society. This theatre of the Palais Cardinal, with its pomp and magnifi cence, ofi'ers a striking contrast to the theatre of H6 tel de Bourgogne as the historians describe it. Book Description
Excerpt from Corneille and Racine in England; A Study of the English Translations of the Two Corneilles and Racine, With Especial Reference: To Their Presentation on the English Stage The collection of translations has been car ried down to the end of the first quarter of the nineteenth century only, as after that time all the English versions were merely literary exercises. The motive prompting the work had completely changed. English renderings of foreign masterpieces may be said to be sin cere translations only when the motive of the translator is to make it possible for the gen eral public, reading no language but English, to know the foreign work in as perfect an English reproduction as he can make. When he produces his work with no such idea, but addresses himself to a small circle who know both languages and can make comparisons, meaning to exhibit his dexterity in manu facturing English verse out of French, he is performing a literary tour de force only, and his production has nothing in common with the sincere translation which forms the material studied here. Book Description
Excerpt from Corneille and Racine For the greater part of the translations in the present volume the writer is responsible. Save in a few passages in the "Cid," where the version in the measure of the original, has been supplied by a friend, he has thought it better to render the meaning of the French verses into English prose than to attempt verses of his own. He is not aware of any English translation into verse of the plays of Corneille which would be endured now, even by the most patient reader. The best, perhaps, is Ambrose Philip's English version of Racine's "Andromaque," known under the title of "The Distressed Mother," which must have found admirers in London during the last century; for many editions of it were printed, and it was several times performed upon our stage. The translations of the choruses in "Athalie," by Randolph and Knight, will be acknowledged in their proper place. Book Description
Excerpt from Polyeucte Pierre corneille was thirty-four years old when he composed his tragedy of Polyeucte. We are told that the beam: esprit: of the H6tel de Rambouillet did not approve of it, and that the poet would have abandoned the intention of having his work performed but for an actor who overcame his scruples, and persuaded him to test the good sense of the public. The success was complete. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Corneille's Cinna: Ou La Clemence D'auguste In the preparation of the edition of Corneille's Cinna, the purpose has been to treat the play distinctly as a piece of literature. The Introduction contains a discussion of the sources of the play and other questions of literary interest; and in the Notes, points of literary criticism and gossip have been freely added, and all allusions of any sort have been carefully explained, the aim being to construct the frame within which the picture will appear to its best advantage. At the same time the grammatical side of the play could not be neglected, since Cinna presents serious difficulties to the student. The places where these Notes are added have been carefully tested during several readings of the text with different classes. I hope that no real difficulty has escaped my attention, and, above all, that the Notes will be found to be of the right kind, suggestive and helpful, pointing out the solution without depriving the student of the benefits to be derived from grammatical discipline. The differences in syntax and linguistic usage between the XVII and XIX. centuries form another category of points calling for annotation. Here the only explanation which is admissible is the historical one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Corneille's Comedies: As a Mirror of Contemporary Events and of the Theories of French Polite Society in the First Half of the Seventeenth Century Anything concerning the Great Corneille, who, according to the well-known and apt words of Voltaire, was called Great, not to distinguish him from his brother Thomas, but from the rest of men, cannot fail to be of interest by reason of his very great ness. Light thrown on even a minor production of a really eminent author helps toward our composite appreciation of him, and cannot but illuminate to some extent his other writings. Not only was Corneille the real Father of French Classic Tragedy, but he has sometimes been called the most romantic of the classic writers. The word Romantic has many meanings and conveys a slightly different concept to almost every authority who uses it, until it sometimes seems as though it only serves as a covering for a number of different theories, which may be used in turn for purposes of polemic by allies who yet differ among themselves, - just as the term pouvoz'r prochain was used by the Jesuits, as Pascal so wittily tells us in his first Provincial Letter. In this case, however, I think it safe to refer Cor neille's romanticism to the spontaneity of emotion we find in some of his tragedies, - particularly to a certain egotism of love displayed by Rodrigue and Chimene in the Cid. For this reason, doubtless, Corneille was looked back to as a predecessor by the developing group of Romanticists in the early nineteenth century.
