This study examines plural marking in Nigerian Pidgin English (NPE) in light of language change. The plural marking strategies used in NPE are the morphological plural -s, postnominal dem, zero marking and reduplication of adjectives/nouns, double marking, numerals and quantifiers as analyzed in previous studies (Tagliamonte et al 1997, Ogunmodimu 2014). The idea for the language change analysis is that older studies show that dem or null marking are the most common plural marking strategies in NPE (Faraclas 1989, Mafeni 1971, Agheyisi 1971), while more recent studies (Tagliamonte et al. 1997, Ogunmodimu 2014) show that the plural marker -s is dominant in the language, while dem is disappearing. The current study arose from the question of the disappearance of dem as a plural marker in NPE as obtained from previous research. I believe an explanation for this disappearance could be that there is a change in the language as it relates to the use of plural markers. While previous studies have examined some linguistic and social factors that may influence the use of these markers (e.g. -s being sensitive to animacy and nominal reference (Tagliamonte et al. 1997) and dem to education (Ogunmodimu 2014), none of these works have looked at the variable- plural marking as a function of language change. In this thesis, I investigate age, gender and dominant language as factors that may influence the choice of plural markers used by NPE speakers in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I also investigate linguistic factors such as animacy, type of determiner and nominal reference, precipitated by a previous study by Tagliamonte et al. (1997). To better test for change in progress, the data of the study is collected through sociolinguistic interviews conducted in NPE, with 20 participants divided into two generations (older and younger) and gender (male and female) evenly distributed. All the speakers are immigrants in Winnipeg who have spent most of their lives in Nigeria to be able to acquire NPE. The results of the study suggest change in progress occurring in plural marking from the older use of zero marking to newer -s marking, as -s is still the dominant plural used in this study. Gender, dominant language and the interaction of age and gender are found to be significant factors in the choice of plural used by the speakers. The result that dominant language is significant supports the hypotheses of previous literature (Tagliamonte et al 1997 and Ogunmodimu 2014).

Introduction Nigeria and Papua New Guinea are two of many countries which have adopted English as their main language. But having so many other, substrate languages influencing the development of a English-speaking country, two major pidgin languages developed: Nigerian Pidgin and Tok Pisin. If one wants to compare these two pidgins with each other, it seems almost inevitable to consider their great geographical distance as well as their historical differences. But my intent in this work is not to elaborate on the status and function and development of the two pidgins but on their differences in grammar. Therefore I'll mainly focus on the noun phrase and the verb phrase. 2. Morphology 2.1 Plural marking on nouns in Tok Pisin The majority of the English based Creole and Pidgin languages both at the Atlantic coast and the South Sea waive marking plurality on nouns or rather use it very optionally. Thus, the same applies to Nigerian Pidgin and Tok Pisin. But if there occurs the need to make a clear distinction between singular and plural both pidgins absolutely dispose of a pluralizer. In Tok Pisin the most common way to express plurality is by the use of the particle ol, which at the same time is identical to the third person plural pronoun. Ol, clearly derived from the English 'all', occurs before the noun as opposed to the post-nominal English plural marking suffix -s. (1) Mi lukim dok. (2) Mi lukim ol dok. I saw the dog. This is to say that in pidgin, there are no strict rules given in utterances. There are several assumptions by Akande and Salami which say that the urban characters of the university environments are strong factors influencing the students' use and attitudes to Nigerian Pidgin English. They insist that apart from their education, living within the university communities, the students are likely to enact more urban networks that are usually made up of multilingual and multi-cultural contents. Akande argues that Pidgin English could be regarded as a marker of identity and solidarity. It is an inter-ethnic code available to Nigerians, who have no other common language.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: Both English and Nigerian Pidgin do not only occur in the described domains, but in individual contexts such as in the media, especially in the field of music. Considering the linguistic spread of Nigerian Pidgin and English, this thesis will concentrate on the two songs "Sweet Mother" by Prince Nico Mbarga, published in 1976, and "I love you" by the twins-duo Peter and Paul Okoye alias "P-Square", presented to the public in 2009. Due to the fact that both songs are sung by native Nigerians, an overview of the Nigerian Pidgin's characteristics will be given in the beginning, which will then be applied to both songs, taking into account their similarities. In a further step, the songs' differences will be analysed, while the possible ascendancy of Standard British English over Nigerian Pidgin shall be considered at the same time. But before outlining all of these aspects, a brief summary of the current language situation in Nigeria will serve as an introduction to the topic, followed by a historical view on the development of both Nigerian Pidgin and English within this country.
