Book Description
Excerpt from The History of France, Vol. 2 It is not always just, however, to condemn a country for its loss of liberty. Representative fi'eedom, that great political result of modern times, was as little the effect of human providence, as the great physical discoveries that have con tributed with it to change the face of civilization. Had not England preserved the boon more by a devoted attachment to old institutions than by any legislative' skill, it is to be feared that not even all our modern ingenuity could have invented a durable constitution. If the French, then, are to be blamed, it is more for fickleness than servility; and even this censure will be rendered lighter by considering the causes that led to the different fate of liberty in the two countries. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of France, Vol. 2 of 2: From the End of the Reign of Louis the Fifteenth to the Consulate of Napoleon Bonaparte The winter of 1774 gives way slowly to the spring: the April sun grows warm, driving the chill from marble court and colonnade, arching rainbows above the foun tains, carpeting in gold the terrace and promenade, and from every plant and tree of garden, park, and wood throwing its banners of leaf and bud and blossom. All Nature revels in loveliness. Life gathers up all its splendours for the living, and nowhere is the perfect glory of the new year more intoxicating than at the Little Trianon, a king's own paradise, where the king is now loitering, and is enjoying these sunny April days. Book Description
Excerpt from France Under Louis XV, Vol. 2 of 2 When the war of the Austrian Succession was ended by the treaty of aix-la-chapelle, Frederick declared this was only a truce, a breathing-spell, which would allow the combatants to form new com binations, and to renew the strife under more favorable conditions. His prophecy was verified, and his own conduct had much to do with changing the political system of Europe. Excerpt from The History of New France, Vol. 2 of 3 Ou the sea-coast which extends toward Florida, one hundred or six score leagues are wanting to show our whole voyage. These 1 would fain have represented here, but to do so would have taken too long, and the engraver has done well to provide me with the small number of maps here given. If my book reaches a second edition this defect can be remedied. In the meantime those interested have the advantage of this one, and of their courtesy will take it in good part. The map of 1609 was, however, reproduced unchanged in the editions of 1611-12, and 1617-18. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of France, Vol. 2 The Sixteenth Century. - Voltaire, struck by the contrast between the misery and the grandeur of this period, by its artistic glory and by the polish of the court, brilliant even in the midst of crimes, cried, "It was a bloody robe of silk and gold." The silk and gold have already been depicted; it remains to display the blood and ruins. The Sons of Henry II. - At his death Henry II. left by Catherine de Medici four young sons. Born sickly and early worn out by their excesses, three of these mounted the throne in rapid succession without leaving any direct heirs. As a result, the sceptre of absolute power, so difficult to wield, fell for a quarter of a century into the hands of children or of youths without experience. Grandsons of the most brilliant of French kings, and inheriting the blood of the Medici through their mother, they had time to display excellent mental qualities and grave faults of character. They were eloquent speakers, poets on occasion, always patrons of literature and art. But they were guilty of those vices by which states are ruined, and the crimes to which their treacherous and passionate natures led them have caused their intellectual gifts to be forgotten. The eldest, Francis II., could not escape the evil results of these contradictions in his nature; he reigned - fortunately for his reputation - for less than a year and a half. Book Description
Excerpt from History of France, Vol. 2: From the Death of Louis XI; Reign of Charles VIII, 1493 1498 A health which demanded incessant care had left small opportunity for any scheme of education to correct innate defects of mind and character. Charles had spent his boyhood at Amboise in a seclusion unbroken by that juvenile experience of public life through which Princes are accustomed to serve their apprenticeship to the throne and he had been kept so close that there were some who doubted if his presence in the castle was suspected by the inhabitants Of the little town which nestled around its towers. Tradition ascribes the régime to the suspicious malevolence Of Louis XI, taught by the disloyalties of his own youth the potentialities for mischief of an heir apparent: but tradition wrongs the King. The attitude of Louis towards his son was that of an over-anxious parent, trembling lest the gift for which he had longed and prayed should be snatched prematurely from his grasp. Solicitous about every detail of the frail child's health, he pestered his attendants with inquiries whether he was in good spirits and eating' and sleeping well, whether he lay warm of nights, or grew over-heated at his play; and a frenzy of anxiety when Charles fell sick was succeeded upon his recovery.
