Book Description
All archaeologists have responsibilities to support the collections they produce, yet budgeting for and managing collections over the length of a project and beyond is not part of most archaeologists training. While this book in the SAA Press Archaeology in Action Series highlights major challenges that archaeologists and curators face with regard to collections, it also stresses the values, uses, and benefits of collections. It also demonstrates the continued significance of archaeological collections to the profession, tribes, and the public and provides critical resources for archaeologists to carry out their responsibilities. Many lament that the archaeological record is finite and disappearing. In this context, collections are even more important to preserve for future use, and this book will help all stakeholders do so.

Book Description
Often seen as geographically marginal and of limited research interest to archaeologists, the Jornada Mogollon region of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico deserves broader attention. Late Prehistoric Hunter-Gatherers and Farmers of the Jornada Mogollon presents the major issues being addressed in Jornada research and reveals the complex, dynamic nature of Jornada prehistory. The Jornada branch of the Mogollon culture and its inhabitants played a significant economic, political, and social role at multiple scales. This volume draws together results from recent large-scale CRM work that has amassed among the largest data sets in the Southwest with up-to-date chronological, architectural, faunal, ceramic, obsidian sourcing, and other specialized studies. Chapters by some of the most active researchers in the area address topics that reach beyond the American Southwest, such as mobility, forager adaptations, the transition to farming, responses to environmental challenges, and patterns of social interaction. Late Prehistoric Hunter-Gatherers and Farmers of the Jornada Mogollon is an up-to-date summary of the major developments in the region and their implications for Southwest archaeology in particular and anthropological archaeological research more generally. The publication of this book is supported in part by the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society and the Center for Material Culture Studies at the University of Delaware. Book Description
In December, 1981, New World Research, Inc. conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of 2,200 ac in the Fort Benning Military Reservation, Alabama and Georgia. The work was performed under Contract No. CX5000-2-0087 for the Archeological Services Branch, Division of National Register Programs, National Park Service, Southeast Region. As part of the scope-of-work, the applicability of a model of site location formulated by Remote Sensing Analysts (RSA) was to be tested (Kohler et al., 1980). The survey identified or relocated 37 sites, including 20 prehistoric, 15 historic, and two prehistoric/historic sites; in addition, 32 isolated finds were identified and recorded. The model developed by RSA was tested and found to be generally correct, though mapping problems were identified. Results from the 2,200-ac survey were extrapolated using the refined computer model to the entire 22,000-ac maneuver area to highlight locations of potential archaeological sites.
