This study will use a descriptive qualitative approach with a sample of first year nurses. Kolb's Experiential Learning Model serves as this study's conceptual framework. For the current study, the sample consisted of 10 newly graduated, female nurses with less than one year of experience working in the hospital setting were interviewed. Data analysis included interviews and transcription by the researcher. Finally, participants were asked about themes to increase rigor. Four themes emerged from this research: 1) how simulation is being used, 2) the perceived value of simulation, 3) simulation versus "real life," and 4) simulation and preparation for practice.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this descriptive phenomenological research was to explore the individual and collective lived experiences of inpatient, direct care nurses practicing in a community-based hospital within the framework of a nursing professional practice model. Method: A snowball sampling methodology was employed. Data were collected via semi-structured focus groups with twenty participants. Qualitative data analysis followed Colaizzi's steps to arrive at common themes and provide rich detail. Scientific rigor and trustworthiness were maintained. Results: Six main themes emerged the described the nurses' lived experiences with the PPM. Foundation of care; promotion of consistent and standardized patient care. Professional knowledge; expanding personal knowledge and subsequent sharing of this knowledge to edify nursing peers. Reflective practice; change in practice and improved patient care facilitated by reflective practice and reflective thinking. Collegiality; PPM use facilitated interdisciplinary communication and professional growth. Cohesion of model components, whole PPM greater than the sum of the individual components. Inconsistency of use; fragmented model use and reinforcement. These themes incorporated the aspect of model use, outcomes, and opportunities for improvement. Findings: If institutions want to implement and actively use a PPM, active promotion beyond a simple orientation is required. The PPM must be highly visible, consistently reinforced, and use continuously evaluated. Administration, managers, and nursing staff need a congruent expectation and understanding of model use and adoption. Managers should evaluate model use as part of the performance review process. Nurses should familiarize themselves with the institutional PPM, actively engage the PPM, and hold one another accountable for PPM use.

Globalization has made it possible for leaders in the United States' (U.S.) healthcare industry to access global labor market to fill vacant nursing positions in their organizations. A significant number of registered nurses from other countries have been hired to work in the U.S. healthcare industry. Inherent in hiring these nurses is difference in culture and professional practices. Registered nurses from Nigeria have been identified as a growing population within the nursing workforce in the U.S. healthcare system. For nurses who are born in other countries and licensed to practice nursing in the U.S. healthcare industry, there is need for them to become acculturated to the new environment when they move from their country of origin (Ea, 2008; Kawi & Xu, 2009; Kishi, Inoue, Crookes, & Shorten, 2014; Xu, Gutierrez, & Kim, 2008). While there is significant research on nurses from other cultures, there is limited research on the lived experiences of registered nurses from Nigeria who live and work in the U.S. healthcare industry. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of Nigerian registered nurses working in the healthcare environment in Northern California. The lived experiences of Nigerian registered nurses were gleaned using three research questions: (a) How do the Nigerian registered nurses describe their challenges working in the U.S. healthcare environment in Northern California? (b) How do the Nigerian registered nurses describe the affect of the challenges on their personal and professional lives? (c) What are the perceived attributes for success identified by the Nigerian registered nurses working in the healthcare environment in Northern California? Purposeful sampling and snowball methods were used to identify 16 participants. Data were collected using 18 semi-structured interview questions, field-notes, a researcher journal, and a review of relevant artifacts. Interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim, categorized, and coded for themes. Four themes--influences to become an registered nurse, developing professionally, transitions experienced, and responding to challenges--and four results--universality of fundamental core nursing clinical practice skills, grassroots effort in seeking access into the nursing profession, microaggressions, and limited support and need for resiliency--emerged from data analysis providing insights into and better understanding of the experiences of Nigerian registered nurses working in the healthcare environment in Northern California, leading to evidence-based conclusions and recommendations.

The aim of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of new graduate nurses who completed a Student Nurse Associate Program during the summer between junior and senior year of their baccalaureate nursing program. This pre-licensure program was designed to support transition to professional practice by fostering confidence and competence, thus reducing fear and anxiety. Purposive sampling with the use of the snowball technique yielded data saturation with a of sample of 12 nurses. Data were generated by asking the participants to respond to four research questions during individual interviews. The naturalistic inquiry of Lincoln and Guba and the data analysis method of Colaizzi were germane to the study. This study revealed eight themes which were significant for new graduates to facilitate a smooth transition to professional practice. These included: 1. Confidence: Growth during the program; 2. Delegation: A difficult challenge; 3. Communication: Learning how to interact with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals; 4. Competence: Perfecting basic skills; 5. Time Management: Developing organizational systems; 6. Work Environment: Learning practices, policies, and people; 7. Prioritization: Critical thinking in action; and 8. Collaboration: Becoming a team player. The participants reported improved abilities in all areas with the exception of delegation and prioritization; these two areas were not mastered to the same extent. This study has contributed to knowledge development regarding transition to practice although more work is needed with a larger and more diverse sample. Pre-licensure and post-licensure programs should be compared in terms of cost, efficacy, and outcomes.

Most newly licensed registered nurses go to work in acute care hospitals, which means they enter an increasingly complex healthcare environment where they experience staffing shortages, high nurse-patient ratios, and workplace violence. The purpose of this study is to attempt to understand the experiences of newly licensed registered nurses who have endured the early years of bedside hospital nursing and continue to work in their first nursing job. The existential phenomenological philosophy of Merleau-Ponty serves as the guiding framework for this qualitative research study. Following IRB approval, criterion and snowball sampling were used to recruit newly licensed registered nurses who graduated between May 2012 and May 2013. An open-ended unstructured interview format was used to collect data from nine nurses willing to be interviewed about their clinical experiences. Participants ranged in age from 24 to 43 years, represented day and night shifts, and included acute and critical care settings from five different health systems across the state of Tennessee. Data were analyzed by the researcher and the Interpretive Research Group at the University of Tennessee using the Thomas-Pollio existential phenomenological approach. All transcripts were read and analyzed for meaning units and global themes which were used to develop a thematic structure. The researcher, research group, and willing study participants agreed upon the final thematic structure. Five figural themes emerged from the data: 1) I found the perfect fit; 2) We're a pretty cohesive group; 3) It's about caring for the patients; 4) I've learned a lot; and 5) Knowing I make a difference. Study rigor was maintained by bracketing, data saturation, interdisciplinary review, member checking, and the use of direct quotes to support findings. This research has implications for nursing education and clinical practice. Findings are applicable to student nurses, newly licensed registered nurses, nurse educators, clinical preceptors, nurse managers, and hospital administrators.
