Book Description
Excerpt from A Pocket-Book of British Birds As introductory to this little book, I think it is desirable that its object should, in the first place, be explained. It is intended solely for the purposes of reference in the field, and has been very carefully compiled by the combined aid of well-known ornithological works, coupled with practical observations and notes made by myself from time to time in various parts of the British Isles. The book is of a small size, and should be carried in the pocket, where it would always be handy. I am aware that an alphabetical arrangement has much to commend it, but I have refrained from adopting such for the very reason that, in the field, as elsewhere, the mind should be trained to regard birds as creatures belonging to some distinct order and family; accordingly I have adopted a scientific arrangement similar to that set forth in Howard Saunders's admirable 'Manual of British Birds, ' a comprehensive work that all lovers and students of Ornithology, requiring more complete information, should at once consult. Information will be found about all British birds that breed in these islands, and those that are regular visitors at one time of the year or another. Rare species - in some cases irregular stragglers and perhaps unwilling visitors - hardly come within the scope of this book, as the chances of seeing them during a country ramble are very slight. Dismissing at once those species of which only a few specimens have been observed or obtained in this country, there yet remain a goodly number of rare birds, and a short note about them is given, either because in many cases, though irregular in their visits, they may be seen in considerable numbers when they do come, or because, though admittedly rare, they so closely resemble other commoner kinds, that it is quite possible they may have been overlooked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Ready Guide to British Birds As the result of long experience the author has cc me to the conclusion that there is a need for a guide to British Birds at once more simple and more ready than any yet published. After various experiments the plan adopted in this book was decided upon, viz. First to arrange the descriptions so that in the case of each bird the same characteristics (colour, ight, haunts, &c.) always follow one another in the same order and then to divide the descriptions into vertical columns, so that the Observer can, by looking down any one column, run through the different descriptions of any particular feature until he comes to one which corresponds tty what he has observed. Book Description
Excerpt from British Birds: Key List Measurements of length are given, but only as an attempt to show the proportionate size of a species. In the writer's Opinion measurements are not of much service, especially as hardly any two persons measure a bird in the same manner. Unless otherwise stated, the sexes are alike in plumage, and the remarks refer to adults in summer plumage. Book Description
Excerpt from A Concise Handbook of British Birds Although the urgent need for compression has prohibited the author from presenting this work as a complete natural history of British Birds, yet he believes that as a handy textbook for reference it has had as yet no rivals. It has been brought up to date as far as possible, every species on the British list having been included, and nearly all described, while the records Of the rarer species have been carefully collected, and in the case Of the common species a tolerably complete life-history has been given. The numbering Of the genera and species will also probably prove Of service. The length Of a bird is (unless otherwise stated) measured from the base Of bill to tip Of tail, all measure ments being in inches and hundredth-parts. The description first given is (unless expressly mentioned) that Of a bird in breeding plumage, 'but the seasonal changes, if appreciable, are added. The habitat may be taken as meaning the region inhabited during the breeding season, but the winter range Of migratory species has usually been added. If brackets enclose a describer's name they indicate that the generic name adopted is not that used by the describer. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of British Birds, Vol. 1 of 3 From the lateness of the period, in reference to the printing of these volumes, at which the occurrence of two examples of this Species in Ireland became known to me, I was only able to introduce a figure and a short notice on a single leaf in its place among the Eagles. The fur ther particulars here inserted may prove acceptable. This Eagle, very similar in its appearance to our well known Golden Eagle, but almost one-third smaller in size.
