Book Description
Normative standards on a new quantitative ataxia (postural equilibrium) test battery using rails of various widths as platforms were presented in a previous report. The present study reports normative standards of performance on a related battery of ataxia tests with the floor as a platform and employed routinely in the vestibular research program of this laboratory. Significant decreases in performance with age and an apparent superior performance by males were found. The scores of bilateral and unilateral vestibular-defective individuals and of patients referred for testing because of symptoms of vertigo departed significantly from the normative standards. The usefulness of individual tests as well as of the test battery in clinical and research situations was made apparent. (Author).

Book Description
A new multi-dimensional quantitative ataxia test battery employing the 'rail method' of testing was developed to assess more precisely than heretofore postural equilibriumdisequilibrium under unusual conditions and stresses such as rotating environments. High reliability, including testretest reliability, was demonstrated for each of two versions: a Long Version employing six rails of varying widths, and a Short Version employing two of these rails. Normative standards covering a wide age range, and age, height, and weight influences upon performance, tentative sex differences in performance, practice effects, and Test Battery relationships with several clinical-type ataxia tests were determined. Validity of the standardized test procedures in the laboratory, in the field, and in clinical situations was demonstrated, and present and future uses of the Test Battery in normals and auricularinvolved individuals in vestibular research as well as in related research-clinical areas were outlined, and several methodological limitations were indicated. (Author).

Book Description
The problem of quantifying a simple, often-used clinical ataxia test (tandem-walking) for inclusion in an ataxia test battery was overcome by adopting the method of counting the number of heel-to-toe steps (1 to 10) a person can take without sidestepping with eyes closed and arms folded against chest. Standardization under these rigid conditions was based on testing 287 normal men and 100 normal women. Validation was based on testing 22 individuals having labyrinthine defects of varying severity and origin. This newly quantified test was found to be as valid an indicator of vestibular ataxia as other subtests of a multidimensional quantitative ataxia test battery with which it was compared, and it has the advantages that, it appears to be free of age influences, and nearly all the normal and none of the abnormal individuals obtained a perfect score.

Book Description
Groups of individuals with various loss or disturbance of labyrinthine function (N=49) and patients who had vertigo as a major symptom or complaint (N=76) were very different from a control group of normals (N=240) in the frequency with which their ataxia test battery performance scores and threshold caloric test responses fell within the lowest 5 per cent of the normative distributions. Generally, caloric test results could be predicted from ataxia test results better than results of ataxia tests from those of caloric tests in the various groups. In those individuals with total or near total loss of labyrinthine function all test findings were in perfect or near perfect agreement in relation to the 5th percentile cut-off criterion employed.
