Book Description
A modeling and simulation based methodology is proposed that introduces the new capability to conduct rapidly consistent and integrated power system architecture trade-off studies at aircraft level in the preliminary design phase of civil aircraft. Conventional and new architectures (e.g. more electric, bleed-less) can be built and analyzed rapidly, sensitivity studies are enabled. A methodology based on the formalization of a parametric power system architecture sizing process combined with a performance analysis process is developed. Dedicated function-based models integrating the operational space (time dependence, failure and degraded modes) are proposed and a modular structure enabling a multi-level modeling approach is elaborated. Three applications illustrate the new capabilities introduced by the developed simulation framework prototype: the aircraft level comparison of different architectures, the electric generator sizing synthesis and the link of power systems simulation to an aircraft global thermal model.

Book Description
This book is the first of a series of volumes that cover the topic of aerospace actuators following a systems-based approach. This first volume provides general information on actuators and their reliability, and focuses on hydraulically supplied actuators. Emphasis is put on hydraulic power actuators as a technology that is used extensively for all aircraft, including newer aircraft. Currently, takeovers by major corporations of smaller companies in this field is threatening the expertise of aerospace hydraulics and has inevitably led to a loss of expertise. Further removal of hydraulics teaching in engineering degrees means there is a need to capitalize efforts in this field in order to move it forward as a means of providing safer, greener, cheaper and faster aerospace services. The topics covered in this set of books constitute a significant source of information for individuals and engineers seeking to learn more about aerospace hydraulics.

Book Description
This thesis proposes an advanced architecting methodology. This methodology allows for the sizing and optimization of aircraft system architecture concepts and the establishment of subsystem development strategies. The process is implemented by an architecting team composed of subsystem experts and architects. The methodology organizes the architecture definition using the SysML language. Using meta-modeling techniques, this definition is translated into an analysis model which automatically integrates subsystem analyses in a fashion that represents the specific architecture concept described by the team. The resulting analysis automatically sizes the subsystems composing it, synthesizes their information to derive architecture-level performance and explores the architecture internal trade-offs. This process is facilitated using the Coordinated Optimization method proposed in this dissertation. This method proposes a multi-level optimization setup. An architecture-level optimizer orchestrates the subsystem sizing optimizations in order to optimize the aircraft as whole. The methodologies proposed in this thesis are tested and demonstrated on a proof of concept based on the exploration of turbo-electric propulsion aircraft concepts.

Book Description
Worried about the growing complexity of systems in your organization? Manage it with recipes for applying agile methodologies and techniques in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) Key Features Learn how Agile and MBSE can work iteratively and collaborate to overcome system complexity Develop essential systems engineering products and achieve crucial enterprise objectives with easy-to-follow recipes Build efficient system engineering models using tried and trusted best practices Book DescriptionAgile MBSE can help organizations manage constant change and uncertainty while continuously ensuring system correctness and meeting customers’ needs. But deploying it isn’t easy. Agile Model-Based Systems Engineering Cookbook is a little different from other MBSE books out there. This book focuses on workflows – or recipes, as the author calls them – that will help MBSE practitioners and team leaders address practical situations that are part of deploying MBSE as part of an agile development process across the enterprise. Written by Dr. Bruce Powel Douglass, a world-renowned expert in MBSE, this book will take you through important systems engineering workflows and show you how they can be performed effectively with an agile and model-based approach. You’ll start with the key concepts of agile methods for systems engineering, but we won’t linger on the theory for too long. Each of the recipes will take you through initiating a project, defining stakeholder needs, defining and analyzing system requirements, designing system architecture, performing model-based engineering trade studies, all the way to handling systems specifications off to downstream engineering. By the end of this MBSE book, you’ll have learned how to implement critical systems engineering workflows and create verifiably correct systems engineering models. What you will learn Apply agile methods to develop systems engineering specifications Perform functional analysis with SysML Derive and model systems architectures from key requirements Model crucial engineering data to clarify systems requirements Communicate decisions with downstream subsystem implementation teams Verify specifications with model reviews and simulations Ensure the accuracy of systems models through model-based testing Who this book is for If you are a systems engineer who wants to pursue model-based systems engineering in an agile setting, this book will show you how you can do that without breaking a sweat. Fundamental knowledge of SysML is necessary; the book will teach you the rest.

Book Description
This thesis proposes a multi-disciplinary optimization framework for the design of aircraft electro-thermal energy systems. In this framework, components are modeled using a method called graph-based modeling. Graph-based modeling utilizes the principle of transient conservation of energy to model the states of a control volume. With this modeling structure, an energy system's state equations can be expressed in terms of transient conservation of energy and these equations can be combined into a set of compact matrix equations. This compact representation of energy systems allows multiple energy domains to be coupled and simulated together with one set of modeling equations. Graph-based modeling also allows easy access to the network structure of the system. This modeling approach is employed within an optimal control formulation to optimize both system-level design parameters and open-loop control trajectories. In total, this framework will allow for multi-disciplinary modeling and design of aircraft energy systems. Case studies for a series hybrid-electric aircraft architecture demonstrate how key parameters of the electrical system, such as battery capacity, can be designed together with the associated thermal management systems for a representative transient flight.
