A Comprehensive Mathematical Model of the Cardiovascular System Under Time-Dependent Acceleration Stress

Pages : 37
Book Description
In this study a comprehensive mathematical model of the cardiovascular system under time-dependent accelerations is developed. Recently developed high performance aircraft would expose the human body to acceleration injury if appropriate life-supporting devies are not incorporated in the design. To aid in the construction of desirable life support systems for aerospace maneuvers, the deformation of the arterial and venous segments under dynamic fluid loads caused by blood pooling during GZ acceleration are calculated. Linearized Navier-Stokes equations for blood flow and equations of large elastic deformation theory for blood vessel deformations are used. The resulting nonlinear partial differential equations are solved numerically.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Pages : 430
Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

A Mathematical Model of Cardiovascular System with Feedback Control
Author: Jiayu Gu
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Blood
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
A mathematical model of human cardiovascular system is presented in this study. The closed-loop model is composed of twenty compartments which includes the left and right ventricles, and the systemic and pulmonary circulations. Two physiologic feedback control mechanisms, autoregulation of blood flow and baroreceptor reflex regulation of arterial pressure, are incorporated in the model. Autoregulation acts by changing local resistance to blood flow through metabolic and myogenic mechanisms, thereby insuring a match between oxygen supply and demand for any tissue or organ. Baroreceptors act through neural pathways to alter heart rate, contractility and peripheral resistance in order to return sudden changes in blood pressure to a normal "set point". Pressure and volume waves in a simulated normal human at rest throughout the systemic circulation were generated. Parameters of the model were set to simulate heart failure in two stages. The effects of autoregulation on the coronary circulation with the changes in ventricular contractility, heart rate and peripheral resistance were studied. The results suggest that the oxygen consumption rate of the coronary circulation is mainly affected by afterload. Maximizing ventricular contractility and peripheral resistance, and minimizing heart rate were shown to improve ventricular coronary vascular reserve.

Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems
Author: Jerry J. Batzel
Publisher: SIAM
ISBN: 0898717450
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems: Modeling, Analysis, and Control uses a principle-based modeling approach and analysis of feedback control regulation to elucidate the physiological relationships. Models are arranged around specific questions or conditions, such as exercise or sleep transition, and are generally based on physiological mechanisms rather than on formal descriptions of input-output behavior. The authors ask open questions relevant to medical and clinical applications and clarify underlying themes of physiological control organization. Current problems, key issues, developing trends, and unresolved questions are highlighted. Researchers and graduate students in mathematical biology and biomedical engineering will find this book useful. It will also appeal to researchers in the physiological and life sciences who are interested in mathematical modeling.

Modeling and Simulating Human Cardiovascular Response to Acceleration
Author: Sam Ahmad Zamanian
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
The human cardiovascular system routinely encounters conditions that cause it to adapt. For example, when an astronaut enters microgravity, his/her cardiovascular system adapts rapidly to the weightless environment with no functional impairment. This adaptation is entirely appropriate while in space. However, it predisposes astronauts to problems when they return. It has been suggested that the regimen for astronauts on long-duration space travel include periods of artificial acceleration via centrifugation, in order to maintain some exposure to a gravitational gradient and thus ameliorate some of the physiological consequences of exposure to microgravity. To design such an intervention, it is desirable to know and understand, as well as to predict the cardiovascular response to centrifugation stress. A reasonably compartmentalized mathematical model of the cardiovascular system that represents these conditions is presented, which will allow for understanding and predicting cardiovascular behavior under such conditions. We validated our simulations against human data and showed that our results closely matched the experimental data. Upon validation, we used our model to predict the response of the cardiovascular system to levels of stress that cannot yet be tested on human subjects.
