Book Description
Excerpt from A Lecture, Introductory to the Course on the Theory and Practice of Medicine, in the University of New York: Session 1847-8 IN appearing before you, gentlemen, on the present occasion, I can not but feel an Oppressive degree Of anxious solicitude. From my earliest days a student of medicine, I have for nearly a quarter of a century been engaged as a zealous votary and teacher of that science and my yearly increasing experience of its varied functions, has served to impress upon me, more and more deeply, the difficulty of attaining a knowledge of its elements, and of imparting that know ledge to others. I have learned, too, to appreciate more accurately and profoundly, the burdensome responsibilities of the office I have so long filled; responsibilities Of the gravest import at all times - the keen sense of which is unavoidably heightened by my removal hither, into a wider and loftier sphere of action than that in which my younger life has been past. Book Description
Excerpt from Lecture, Introductory to the Course on the Theory and Practice of Medicine, in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College: Session of 1846-47 Then, what is life I begin my answer to this question by propounding-another, viz., what is not life and by venturing, in answer, to say that it is inorganic matter. Inorganic matter is not life. This position may require some elucidation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture to the Course of the Institutes of Medicine, &C. In Jefferson Medical College: Delivered Nov. 8, 1843 We are accustomed, gentlemen, to hear theory placed in unworthy contrast with practice; as if theory were idle speculation; and as if mere observation of facts could make the good practitioner without reasoning or theory. I am prepared to admit, that serious evil has resulted from systems which have borne the names of theories - emana tions from the fertile minds of distinguished individuals, to whose views too much homage has been paid. The fault, however, in such cases, is, that the reasoning powers of the mass are not exerted, because it is easier for them to adopt the Opinions of one whose intellectual endow ments they have been taught to respect, than to sift the mat ter for themselves. Book Description
Excerpt from Introductory Lecture to the Course on the Principles and Practice of Surgery, in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College: Session of 1846-47 The constitution is also varied, in different individuals; according to age, sex, condition in life, mode of living, occu pation, physical and moral training, and in the same person from week to week, or from day to day, precisely as the ascertained laws which govern the operation of agents upon the system are conformed to or transgressed - there being a necessary connection and mutual dependence among all the organs of the body, and also particular relations between them and the objects of inanimate nature. This connexion and dependence, and these relations, can never be infringed without suffering. Man cannot escape these laws. They pertain to his existence; they are the ordinances of the Creator himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
