Excerpt from A Laboratory Course in Physics for Secondary Schools Since the precise method of accomplishing this end will depend upon the sort of laboratory equip ment which is available, the course has been given considerable flexibility by introducing alternative experiments. Thus, if gas is not accessible the student will omit Exp. 5, but will get exactly the same principle through performing Exp. 5a. Or, if the laboratory is not equipped with commercial ammeters and voltmeters, Exp. 31 will be omitted and Exp. 31 A performed. Similar choices will be found indicated throughout the text. Another feature of the course is that the experiments do not presuppose any previous study of the subject involved, or any antecedent knowledge of physics. The laboratory work may be kept in advance of the classroom discussion throughout the entire course if desired. Indeed, in their own elementary work the authors prefer to let more than half of the experiments constitute the student's first introduction to the subject treated. Furthermore, students are neither instructed nor advised to study their experiments before entering the laboratory, for each experiment has been arranged to carry with it its own introduction.
