Excerpt: ...name, or of their royal estates; or" (3) "Slanderously or maliciously to publish and pronounce, "by express writing or words, that the king our sovereign "lord is an heretic, schismatic, tyrant, infidel, or usurper; or" (4) "Rebelliously detain or keep any of his ships, am"munition, or artillery," and not to deliver them up when demanded. The 28 Hen. 8, c. 10 (1536), described by Hale as "the "great concluding act against the papal authority," subjected to the penalties of prcemunire the asserting and maintaining of the papal authority; and obstinate refusal to take the oath of abjuration therein provided was made high treason. By 31 Hen. 8, c. 8 (1539), which was passed in the same year as the Act of the Six Articles, proclamations concerning religion were put on the same footing as acts of parliament, and those who went beyond sea in order to avoid the penalties enacted by the proclamations were to be guilty of high treason. By 35 Hen. 8, c. 3 (1543), passed after the fall of Cromwell, the king's 1 style was united and annexed to the imperial crown of England, and it was made treason to "imagine to "deprive the king, queen, prince, or the heirs of the king's "body, or any to whom the crown is or shall be limited, of any "of their titles, styles, names, degrees, royal estate or regal "power annext to the crown of England." These were the new treasons created by Henry VIII.'s legislation, in order to secure and establish the great religious and political revolution which he had effected. I think that the impression which they have created of tyranny is somewhat exaggerated though it is not unnatural. Hale observes that part of the act of 1534, viz., ...
