Book Description
Excerpt from A History of European Thought in the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 3 As in the earlier volumes, I have again been assisted. By the advice and encouragement of many friends. To the names given before I wish to add that of Prof. W. R. Sorley of King's College, Cambridge, to whose valuable suggestions I have, as will be seen, referred in several instances. I must again express my deep sense of obligation to Mr Thos. Whittaker, b.a., whose assist a'nce has in this section exceeded in importance, if possible, even that which he had so fully given me in the earlier volumes. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of European Thought in the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 1 As the plan of this work is fully given in the Introduction, only a few points, chiefly of a personal character, remain to be touched on here. The first refers to the motive which led me to a course of studies, extending over more than thirty years, of which this book is the outcome. The object of the book is philosophical, in the sense now accepted by many and by divergent schools - i.e., it desires to contribute something towards a unification of thought. When in the beginning of my philosophical studies I became convinced that this is the task of philosophy, I felt the necessity of making myself acquainted, at first hand, with the many trains of reasoning by which, in the separate domains of science, of practical and of individual thought, such a unification has been partially and successfully attempted. Such a survey seemed to me indispensable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of European Thought in the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 2 IN this second volume I have carried out the programme which I put forward in the preface to the first volume, thus finishing the first portion of my undertaking - The History of Scientific Thought in the Nineteenth Century. The two volumes form a work complete in itself, and for this reason I have attached an alphabetical index. In addition to the names I mentioned in the preface to the first volume, I have to add those of other friends who have been of great help to me in the course of my work. With Professor Sampson, of Durham University, I have had many helpful discussions on the subjects of this volume, notably on chapters viii. And xiii, which he read in proof. Mr Arthur Berry, m.a., of King's College, Cambridge, has read over chapter xiii, and made valuable suggestions. Mr Archibald S. Percival, m.e., of Cambridge, has read over chapters vi. And x. Professor F. G. Weiss, D.so., of Victoria University, has read chapters viii. And ix. Mr Thomas Whittaker has continued his revision, much to the benefit of the book; and Dr Spence Watson has given the finishingvi preface. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of European Thought in the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 3 I had originally intended to publish the two volumes which should form the second section of this work, dealing with the History of Philosophical Thought during the Nineteenth Century, together. With this intention I wrote the text of both volumes, with the exception of a closing chapter. When, however, after the lapse of many years I returned to the revision and the working up of the notes and references, I found that in the meantime the whole subject had in my own mind acquired a somewhat altered aspect, and that to give expression to this I had to introduce important changes and additions. As to carry these out much more time was required than I had expected, I have given way to the wish of some of my friends, as also to my own growing conviction, that it would be better to publish the third volume by itself and let the fourth follow as soon as possible. I cannot help feeling that this is somewhat unfair to my readers and critics, as the whole subject cannot so easily be divided into separate tolerably independent parts as seemed possible in the first section.
