Book Description
Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from English Literature Uring the last few years the importance of English Literature in any system of education - whether Primary, Secondary, or University - has been gradually recognised. And, partly as a consequence of this recognition, there is an increasing number of older readers who desire to know a little more' about our great authors and their works. Among the many excellent works dealing with English Literature, there appears to be room for something between a mere primer on the one hand, and a long and advanced history of literature on the other. The present volume, written in a simple style with as few technicalities as possible, is designed to fill this inter mediate position. It is primarily intended for pupils in the Upper Forms of Secondary Schools, but it will be found equally suitable for the general reader. Its aim is to review in a general but critical manner the ground work of English Literature. Special attention has therefore been paid to the course of development of our literature, to the general characteristics of each period, and to the external influences which have from time to time affected its progress. The work and style of the greater authors have been discussed somewhat fully, and brief illustrative extracts from their works have been added. Lesser authors have been treated in due pro portion, care having been taken not to crowd the book with names, dates, or unimportant details. Questions have been appended to each chapter some of these are of a simple nature, whilst others are intended for those who are able to give further thought and study to the subject. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of English Literature In writing this book the author has sought to lay stress on the facts of the history of English literature, rather than on the interpretation of it. The need of the high school pupil would seem to be, first of all, the chief facts, given in a continuous lrnportant movements, so far as is possible, told in terms ot/'n'ien rather than of ideas. Though A certain amount 'of aesthetic comment, implied if not is'tated, is inevitable in any survey of literature which is more than a dictionary of names, the intention of the present writer has been to place the emphasis on men, on what they did, and on how they came to do it - not on what the world thinks of their performance. By such a method the space gained is considerable; there are important facts which cannot be included in a small volume if it is half-full of interpretation. Book Description
Excerpt from American Literature: For Secondary Schools Teachers of English are fairly well agreed that most of the time spent in literary study should be devoted to literature itself, rather than to history, biography, or second-hand criticism. Yet many, and it seems to me an increasing number, feel that the student needs a brief general survey to aid him in grouping and correlating scattered facts, and to show things in their right propor tions. This is especially true in American literature, where, if anywhere, the American student should corre late literary history with other history, and should see that American authors reflect in their writings national life.
