Book Description
Since early times, agriculture has been pivotal to England's economy. This is the two-part seventh in a magisterial seven-volume, eight-piece compilation by the economist James E. Thorold Rogers (1823-90), which represents the most complete record of produce costs in England between the thirteenth and eighteenth centuries. Drawing on a variety of sources including college archives and the Public Record Office, Rogers documents the fluctuating prices of commodities such as livestock, wheat, hay, wool, textiles and labour in a time of great economic change, when the growing economy of the early middle ages was shaken by famine and the Black Death, and then gradually recovered towards the Agrarian Revolution. First published in 1902 (and edited by Rogers' son), Part 1 presents data from 1703 to 1793, showing the prices of a range of products across the country; Part 2 consists of further documentary information collected by Rogers for the work.

Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 7: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament, 1259, to the Commencement of the Continental War, 1793; Compiled Entirely From Original and Contemporaneous Records; Part I, 1708-1793 AS it has been decided to bring the Histom (y Agriculture and Prices to an end with the seventh volume, which is now laid before the public, some apology for the incomplete condition of the work is necessary, as well as an explanation of the great delay which has occurred in printing these pages. The fifth and sixth volumes were published in 1887, and during the last three years of his life my father was busily en gaged in collecting material for the concluding part of his book. A large number of figures had been brought together, and even tabulated, when he was seized with the illness that ultimately proved fatal to him. But the series was incomplete, and though prices had been collected for several articles for every year in the period he had set himself to deal with, many subjects were but poorly represented. Among the papers that were left, no clue was found to the existence of any other figures, or to the sources from which he had proposed to draw further information. My father invariably worked alone, with out assistance or delegation, and there was no one therefore who was in a position to offer any valuable opinion on the intended scope of the work. When therefore the Delegates of the University Press kindly agreed to allow me to edit the manuscript my father left behind him, two courses were open to me. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, 1401 1582, Vol. 3: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament, 1259, to the Commencement of the Continental War, 1793 The most valuable facts contained in this volume are derived from the records preserved in the Oxford and Cambridge Colleges. There are a few farm accounts of New College, which continued the practice of agriculture on account of the corporation for about thirty-five years after the commencement of the fifteenth century; but for the most part the record is that of expenditure, not of production. The accounts, however, of the Oxford Col leges are not precise in detail. It appears that the annual roll, signed by the bursars, was merely an abstract of a more detailed account, which, having served its imme diate purpose, was, cast aside or destroyed. Thus the accounts cf Magdalen College, Oxford, contain one year, I Ric. III, in which the original method of stating the balances is represented, and a large volume of rough entries from which numerous, and those very valuable, facts have been derived. But as a rule the entries are disappointing. The Oxford Colleges, which at an early date abandoned baking and brewing on their own account and dealt directly with tradesmen, seldom give quanti ties. They are also careless in keeping accounts, and sometimes the head of the College reproves the bursars for neglect of duty. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 7: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament (1359) To the Commencement of the Continental War (1793), Compiled Entirely From Original and Contemporaneous Records; 1703-1793, Part I Tabulated figures exactly as they stood; the other was to supplement them as far as possible by further research of my own, with the ultimate object of writing some Commentary on the figures, which though it could not possibly compare with the preceding volumes, might yet elucidate certain points, and assist other students to make profitable use of the great collection of historical material that these volumes contain. The former course would have had the advantage of giving the public the benefit of my father's work at once. But on considera tion it seemed that this book - if of any value at all would probably be of use for some time to come, and that therefore a few years' delay in publication would be of little consequence, if in the meantime the tables of prices could be even approximately completed. Steps were at once taken to discover whether any unpublished manuscripts existed, from which a few prices might be gleaned that would supply information for the vacant period. After a few months of disappointment - or, at best, scanty results - I had the good fortune to light upon a collection of prices which fulfilled exactly all the conditions that were required.
