Book Description
Manfred Weidhorn explores this emerging conservatism through consideration of different Churchillian interests - such as domestic issues and the concept of imperial mission. The most complex aspect of Churchill's conservatism is his ambivalence to war. A closer reading of his utterances and of the observations of those about him suggests a definite and idiosyncratic love of war. Clear too, says Weidhorn, is that violence was a means - not an end - for Churchill. A man of peace, Churchill's extremity in posing issues sometimes made peace elusive. But in the crunch of 1940, his eccentricity, or obsession, became Western Civilization's salvation. During his years in the wilderness, Churchill wrote a huge biography of his ancestor, the Duke of Marlborough. Besides presenting the Duke - a brilliant general much maligned for avarice and warmongering - in a favorable way, his work sheds an interesting light on the imminent World War II.

Book Description
The Harmony of Interests: Agricultural, Manufacturing, and Commercial was authored by Henry Charles Carey, an important economist and a leader in the American school of developmental capitalism. Born in Philadelphia, Carey would go on to become the chief economic advisor to Abraham Lincoln. The Harmony of Interests is Carey's work espousing support for the American system of economics, in contrast to the British System. Carey takes issue with the British system and the hands-off approach of the central government in economic issues. While most definitely a capitalist, Carey believes the government should play a more significant role in regulating and stimulating the economy, primarily through intervention in infrastructure projects, the support of a national bank, and the protection of domestic industry through high tariffs and subsidies to eligible companies. The author outlines his views over a series of chapters that total more than two hundred pages. This book is presented without an introduction or table of contents, but is concluded with a detailed index. Carey was an influential economist, and the system detailed in this work is more or less the economic system followed by the United States through much of the twentieth century. While a highly technical work, the book is not totally beyond reproach for the reader unfamiliar with the inner workings of macroeconomics. Carey's writing is clear and easily digestible. The Harmony of Interests: Agricultural, Manufacturing, and Commercial was an important work of economics by one of the leaders in the field. Any reader interested in the history of economic policy in the United States and the broader western world will surely find this to be a fascinating read. Book Description
The Reformation-era writings that make up the Lutheran Confessions remain lively resources for Christian ministry and mission today. Because each of the documents within the Book of Concord was written with a specific context and rhetorical purpose in mind, each has its own compelling story and objectives. Luther’s catechisms present the faith for daily life at the grass-roots level, with teaching elements that we might now view as typical of social media and multimedia. The Augsburg Confession and its Apology provide an adaptable foundation for preaching, teaching, church organization, and dialogue that is rooted in the promise of Christ, received through faith. Fifteen years after the Diet of Worms, the Smalcald Articles reveal yet another “Here I stand” moment for Luther. Finally, the Formula of Concord shows how the next generations of Lutherans used collaboration and consensus as they wrestled with important themes of faith and life. In summary, as these texts engage us with their stories, they invite us to consider what is most important about our journeys of faith and Christian witness in today’s twenty-first-century contexts.

Book Description
Frequently the achievements of pioneering economic writers are assessed by imposing contemporary theories of markets, economics, politics, and history. At last, here is a book that appraises the work of the leading English economic writers of the seventeenth century using intellectual concepts of the time, rather than present-day analytical models, in order to place their economic theories in context. In an analysis that tracks the Stuart century, Andrea Finkelstein traces the progress of such figures as Gerard de Malynes, William Petty, John Locke, and Charles Davenant by inviting us into the great trading companies and halls of parliament where we relive the debates over the coinage, the interest rate, and the nature of money. Furthermore, we see them model their works on the latest developments in physiology, borrow ideas from bookkeeping, and argue over the nature of numbers in an effort to construct a market theory grounded in objective moral value. This comprehensive approach clarifies the relationship between the century's economic ideas and its intellectual thought so that, in the end, readers will be able to judge for themselves whether this really was the age of the Capitalist Geist. Finkelstein has crafted her book to be both inclusive and interdisciplinary by skillfully integrating biography, political history, economic history, and intellectual theory as well as the economic heritage of its subjects. While the concepts are far from simple, Finkelstein's adroit style presents her analysis in an extremely accessible manner. Andrea Finkelstein is Assistant Professor of History, City University of New York.
