Book Description
Excerpt from 1915 Hand-Book of West Virginia: The State's Wonderful Development, Its Natural Resources and Industrial Advantages, Biographies of Prominent Citizens and Stories of Leading Business Institutions The soils of West Virginia are of two general classes - alluvial and sedentary. The alluvial soils have been formed in the valleys by the overflow Of the streams and the silt from the adjacent hills. They are highly fertile and with good cultivation produce abundant crops. The sedentary soils have been formed by the disintegration of the underlying rocks, and vary in character with the nature of the rocks themselves. They are composed of the various limestones, sandstones and Shales, and run from a moderate toa high degree Of fertility, but are all easily made productive by proper treatment.
