Book Description
Excerpt from A First Course in Physics The course presented in this book, and in the List of Labora tory Experiments, which is published in a separate volume, has grown out of the actual needs of the elementary work in physics in the University of Chicago, particularly in the University High School of the School of Education and the affiliated secondary schools. Its most characteristic features have been on trial for three or four years in more than a score of different secondary schools in various parts of the country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Description
Excerpt from Course in Elementary Physics The present pamphlet comprises the text of the first few chapters of an elementary work on Physics, designed to supplement the lectures delivered to the students of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the first two years of their course. It is intended to impart such a general knowledge of the science as will enable them with advantage to continue the pursuit of the subject in the more advanced work of the Physical Lab oratory. Book Description
Excerpt from The First Book in Physics The subjects that belong to physics. Physics is one of the most important branches of science. Many times every day we make use of some of its principles. All the motions of our bodies, whether in work or play, are made in accordance with these principles. The act of throwing a ball, running, skating, rowing, climbing a tree, swinging, falling, and so on, are all acts which may be explained by the principles and laws treated of in physics. All bodies fall to the earth; water runs down hill winds blow and the earth revolves about the sun. These are all problems in physics. Then there are a great number of machines which man uses in doing his work. The plough, wagon, locomotive, lathe, hammer, saw, wind wheels, water-wheels, sail-boats, steam-ships. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physics It will be seen as we proceed that in some parts of the subject the relations between observed facts are better understood than in other parts. Thus in Mechanics the relations between phe nomena have been so well ascertained that we are able to start from a few simple laws regarding the motions of bodies and from these deduce explanations of the most complicated motions. In other parts of the subject we must be content to take from time to time some one principle and trace the logical consequences of it as far as we can, and then proceed to do the same with other principles. After classifying and studying a group of facts, the procca by which we arrive at some underlying principle is called Induction. Thus, the principle of gravitation was discovered by Newton after a careful comparison of the motions of falling bodies and of the moon and the planets. Having found a general principle underlying and binding together many phenomena, we my reason forward from it and deduce other known or unknown facts, as in Geometry we deduce one proposition from another. This process is called Deduction. In a brief account of Physics we must necessarily use deductive more frequently than inductive methods; but, where space will permit, the efiort may be made to show how by induction important fundamental principles have been discovered. Book Description
Excerpt from First Lessons in Physics Inasmuch as the demand of a large amount of time might delay the introduction of physical science into the Common School, the book has been so 'prepared as to secure good results in the minimum of time ever given any study in our schools, viz.: one lesson a week. Each of the thirty-nine lessons commences with a fact familiar to the child, or an easy little experiment, which serves as the basis for the development of a natural law. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Text-Book on Physics The former describes natural objects, classifies them according to their resemblances, and, by the aid of Natural Philosophy, points out the laws of their pro duction and development. The latter is concerned with the laws which are exhibited in the mutual action of bodies on each other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
