Excerpt from A Descriptive Catalogue of Manuscripts in the Libraries of the University of Chicago This Catalogue is the result of the conviction that the possession of manuscripts of even a moderate antiquity carries with it the responsibility of publishing some account of them for the use of scholars. It has also been our belief that a descriptive catalogue will make the manuscripts now in the University's possession more useful to the departments to which they relate, and that the only way to build up a notable collection of manuscripts in the University is to make the most of what we have. Not all indeed that the University now possesses in the way of manuscripts is here included. The Greek papyri in Haskell Oriental Museum we have been obliged to reserve for separate treatment, although the inclusion of those texts from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, some of them unpublished, would have enriched this volume. The East Indian and other valuable oriental manuscripts belonging to Haskell Museum we have left untouched. Since the completion of our work upon this Catalogue, too, new collections including valuable autograph letters have been given to the University by Mr. Edward B. Butler, Dr. Frank W. Gunsaulus, Mrs. Erskine M. Phelps, and Mrs. Emma B. Hodge. Such collections of letters and documents evidently call for a special catalogue. Further, the mass of manuscript fragments from bindings or still in bindings present a large field for the manuscript cataloguer. We have made a beginning with these, but such pieces are seldom of value, and while a few of the more significant ones are described in the present volume, we have not as yet felt justified in asking the University's permission to destroy dozens of fine old bindings of unquestioned interest in the history of book-making, in the effort to detach parchment fragments of doubtful value. Finally, it is more than probable that as the cataloguing of the University's printed books goes on, some manuscripts long since in its possession will come to hand; but while we covet these for our Catalogue, and have made such search for them as we could, it has seemed wiser to proceed with those we have than to wait for an end which will never come, since the University will never cease to acquire manuscripts. Of the manuscripts treated in this Catalogue, few have been secured through special purchase. Nearly all have come to the University with large collections of printed books. The libraries of Hengstenberg, acquired in 1869-70, George B. Ide (1873-74), the American Bible Union (1885-86), and the Old University of Chicago (1891) brought some manuscripts with them. The Bodleian Library possesses a significant collection of Latin medieval manuscripts from Germany, most of them acquired and donated by Archbishop Laud in the 1630s. They are precious survivals from the period of the Thirty Years War. Their significance arises not just from the number of individual manuscripts but from the fact that they represent substantial portions of the libraries of ecclesiastical houses in Wurzburg, Mainz, and Eberbach. This book presents a detailed description of the fifty-six manuscripts from Wurzburg in the Bodleian, most of them from the cathedral chapter (the Domstift St. Kilian). The majority date from the ninth century, and are extremely important from a textual and palaeographical point of view: they constitute the most important single library of Carolingian manuscripts in the British Isles. Wurzburg was one of the leading Anglo-Saxon foundations on the continent of Europe, planting cultural roots which are manifested in almost every aspect of the manuscripts themselves. The catalogue provides authoritative and superbly detailed descriptions of these manuscripts in all their aspects, especially their texts there are many important early copies of the texts of the Church Fathers and their scripts, some of whose forms are unique to Wurzburg. This is the first comprehensive scholarly publication of the rich holdings of Greek manuscripts and miniatures in Princeton, New Jersey, housed in the Firestone Library and the art museum of Princeton University, in the Scheide Library, and in Princeton Theological Seminary. This important material represents both a broad range of time--from the early Byzantine period through the mid-nineteenth century--and a broad range of content, from Byzantine copies of classical texts to Gospel books, Lectionaries and patristic homilies, hymns and texts of the liturgy, medical books, and Holy Land pilgrimage guides. Among the manuscripts are some spectacularly illustrated works, key monuments in the history of Byzantine illumination: an eleventh-century codex of John Klimax's Heavenly Ladder with vivid and unusual depictions of monastic life; evangelist portraits from a number of artistic periods and centers; extraordinary pages of pure ornament; and fine examples of post-Byzantine liturgical illustration of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Among the most significant texts are a sixth-century palimpsest with Greek hymns in an extremely early form of musical notation, and a thirteenth-century copy of Aristotle's Organon, heavily annotated by the renowned Byzantine scholar and teacher John Chortasmenos (ca. 1370-1430). The collection also includes a fascinating eighteenth-century genealogical chronicle--a 45-foot-long roll with 562 illustrations of biblical events and personalities from the Creation to the Ascension of Christ, a work that was probably produced in the area of present-day Romania. This collection offers insight into many aspects of the artistic and intellectual life--theological, monastic, scholarly, ecclesiastical--of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine world. It also contributes to the history of Greek philology and the development of the Greek book over more than a millennium, from the earliest centuries of manuscript production down to the period when, long after the appearance of printing, liturgical texts continued to be copied by hand and lavishly illuminated. The catalogue provides codicological and art-historical analysis of all 64 manuscripts and leaves, along with detailed information on their content, provenance, and bindings; extensive bibliographies; and ample plates, almost all of them in color.
