Book Description
A definitive and approachable guide to life during, and after, breast cancer The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is simply being a woman. Madhulika Sikka's A Breast Cancer Alphabet offers a new way to live with and plan past the hardest diagnosis that most women will ever receive: a personal, practical, and deeply informative look at the road from diagnosis to treatment and beyond. What Madhulika Sikka didn't foresee when initially diagnosed, and what this book brings to life so vividly, are the unexpected and minute challenges that make navigating the world of breast cancer all the trickier. A Breast Cancer Alphabet is an inspired reaction to what started as a personal predicament. This A-Z guide to living with breast cancer goes where so many fear to tread: sex (S is for Sex - really?), sentimentality (J is for Journey - it's a cliché we need to dispense with), hair (H is for Hair - yes, you can make a federal case of it) and work (Q is for Quitting - there'll be days when you feel like it). She draws an easy-to-follow, and quite memorable, map of her travels from breast cancer neophyte to seasoned veteran. As a prominent news executive, Madhulika had access to the most cutting edge data on the disease's reach and impact. At the same time, she craved the community of frank talk and personal insight that we rely on in life's toughest moments. This wonderfully inventive book navigates the world of science and story, bringing readers into Madhulika's mind and experience in a way that demystifies breast cancer and offers new hope for those living with it.

Book Description
As she faced a future of treatment, surgery, and uncertainty upon her diagnosis with Breast Cancer aged 31, Claire turned to creativity for its healing powers. Finding strength in words and pictures alike, the young woman started a creative journal which became an outlet as each day brought new physical and emotional challenges. Through vibrant sketches that documented this difficult time paired with affirming captions alongside them; Claire found solace in art form during her journey toward recovery. Claire's journey through 2022 has been beautifully documented in her sketchbook, an artwork all on its own. This powerful piece captures the struggles of cancer and how it affects day-to-day life and those moments we can all relate to. Her sketches offer a unique perspective that words alone could never express - come join Claire on this remarkable adventure. She has created a unique way of sharing her experiences with cancer, by creating art that provide an insightful and honest look into the day-to-day aspects of her life that many of us can relate to. She allows her readers to better understand her journey and how she has managed it by using pictures in place of words. These images allow us to connect with her on a much deeper level, since they are far more expressive than any amount of words ever could be. The beauty in these paintings not only helps give a greater understanding of Claire's story, but also shines a light on the everyday moments we often take for granted. Through her pictures, Claire opens a beautiful window for us - offering us an intimate glance into all she is going through with grace and strength. C is more than a letter--it's a symbol of courage, strength, and hope that one brave soul named Claire embodied while fighting cancer. With artistry, she created 'A Year With C' to honour her journey - but its impact reaches far beyond her own story; it provides support for friends, family members, or total strangers who need an extra dose of inspiration in their lives. This book will remain as evidence long into the future: there truly is power in living with heart! 31% of the profits will be donated to Breast Cancer Care to represent the 31 women who die each day from secondary breast cancer.

Book Description
A breast cancer diagnosis at forty-nine forces Christine Shields Corrigan, a wife, mom, and meticulous list-maker, to confront her deepest fears of illness, death, and loss of control as she struggles to face cancer again. From the discovery of a "junky" cyst, to chemotherapy and surgery, sleepless nights filled with rosaries and "what ifs," and shifting family dynamics, her adult experience mirrors her teen bout with Hodgkin's lymphoma, with one exception-she no longer has parents keeping her in the dark. With the ghosts of cancer past hovering around her, Chris falls into the same overprotective traps her taciturn Irish-Catholic parents created, striving to keep her family's life "normal," when it is anything but, and soldiering through on her own, until a neighbor's unexpected advice and gift move her to accept others' help. With fierce honesty, poignant reflection, and good humor, Chris shares a journey filled with sorrow, grace, forgiveness, and resilience, as she wends her way through cancer for the second time. Again offers practical guidance and hope to individuals that they have the strength to forge a path beyond a diagnosis.

Book Description
Foreword Book of the Year Award Independent Publishers Award (IPPY) Lambda Literary Award Finalist Publishing Triangle Award Finalist GAMMA Award, Best Feature from The Magazine Association of the Southwest for “Getting the News,” The Georgia Review, Summer 2009 Notable Essay of the Year Citation in Best American Essays 2010 for “Getting the News” Named one of the Best Books of the Year by the Guerilla Girls On Tour and by WILLA: Women in Literary Arts and Letters An extended meditation on the nature of love and the nature of time inside illness, Called Back is both a narrative and non-narrative experiment in prose. The book moves through the standard breast cancer treatment trajectory (diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation), with the aim of discovering unexpected vectors of observation, meaning and desire inside each phase of the typically mandated four-part ritual. A lyrical feminist critique of living with cancer at the turn of the twenty-first century in the United States, the book looks through the lens of cancer to discover new truths about intimacy and essential solitude, eroticism, the fact of the body, and the impossibility of turning away. Offering original exegeses of the work of Marsden Hartley, Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, and Marcel Proust, Called Back relies on these artists’ queer aesthetics to tease the author back to life. What might a person tutored as a reader of signs “see” inside breast cancer’s paces, protocols, and regimes? What does the experience occlude, and what can we afford to liberate? The first chapter paves the way for the book’s central emphases: a meditation on the nature of “news” and the new, on noticing, on messages—including those that the body itself relies upon in the assumption of disease—and the interpretive methods we bring to them in medical crisis. Language is paramount for how we understand and act on the disease, how we imagine it, how we experience it, and how we treat it, Cappello argues. Working at the borders of memoir, literary nonfiction, and cultural analysis, Called Back aims to displace tonal and affective norms— infantilizing or moralizing, redemptive, sentimental or cute—with reverie, rage, passionate intensity, intelligence, and humor.

Book Description
On the Journey:The Art of Living with Breast Cancer is my personal experience of the diagnosis and first phase of treatment of breast cancer. A mammogram confirmed a mass; the biopsy confirmed it was cancer. I was diagnosed with stage 3, breast cancer February 22nd, 2013. That was the beginning. I started this series of mandalas to help me get through the Journey on which I was embarking. What has helped me the most has been using art to process my feelings, creating a new mandala each day to move healthy healing energy into my body and process out the negative energy. I knew from the beginning, art was and is essential for my healing. Creating the mandalas and doing the writings On the Journey has supported me emotionally through this difficult time. Doing art, on a nearly daily basis, has kept me focused on the Now. Sharing the Journey has helped me. I have learned I am not alone. On January 2, 2014, I was upgraded to stage 4, breast cancer. The Journey continues with the loving support from my community, a sisterhood of survivors and thrivers, friends and loved ones. Hundreds of people have sent me angels, their prayers, their love and support. We all need to know we belong, that we are part of this glorious species: human kind. Enjoy and explore your own journey as well.
