Current research (Chickering, Dalton, & Stamm, 2006, Jacobson & Jacobson, 2012, and Parks, 2000) supports the need for and an expectation of college students to develop more than just academic, professional, and/or vocational training while enrolled at institutions of higher education. This study examined the connection between college students, spirituality, and life change events. The research study involved a quantitative examination of the relationship between spirituality and life changing events of first-year college students. Specifically, the study evaluated whether life change events (e.g., financial difficulties, medical issues, family conflicts) correlated with undergraduate college students' spirituality levels. Three research questions and a hypothesis were included in this study. The hypothesis was based on the foundation that by researching whether or not there is a relationship between spirituality and life change events, college personnel can optimize the life change event experiences which can foster spiritual growth (Parks, 2000). Significance was found within the calculations performed to investigate what extent demographic factors correlate with a student's level of spirituality. It appears that a student's religious affiliation has a strong correlation with spirituality level. While significance was found within one of the three research questions for this study, the hypothesis was not supported. Even without significant findings, the research conducted for this study supports institutions of higher education seeking to provide opportunities for the spiritual development of college students by adding to the knowledge base regarding these correlations.

The achievement gap between private and public school college-bound students has continued to widen each year since 1972. The researcher studied the relationship of Christian school college-bound students' religiosity/spirituality using a validated survey instrument and their achievement as measured on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. The literature implies a relationship, but there is a gap in studying homogeneous religious groups. Therefore, the researcher selected a homogeneous grouping, Texas Christian high school college-bound seniors, as the sample for this study. The researcher obtained permission to use the Religiosity and Spirituality Scale for Youth (RASSY) survey instrument and included demographic and score data from student Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) reports. The researcher used Pearson r to analyze relationships between students' religiosity and spirituality as measured by the Religiosity and Spirituality Scale for Youth (RASSY), years enrolled in a Christian school, and students' composite critical reading, mathematics, and writing SAT scores. Results indicated a positive and significant relationship between years enrolled in a Christian school and composite SAT scores.

This project will examine the association between these three areas. Academic success will be measured among College Learning Strategies students using their pre-class and post-class grade point averages. A pre- and post-class survey will be administered to students in order to measure spiritual growth. Spiritual growth will be compared to a student's involvement in some type of accountability. The finding of a correlation between spiritual growth and accountability and/or spiritual growth and academic achievement would lead to an increased emphasis on spiritual growth in academic classes. Such findings would also suggest the need for increased emphasis on providing small group or other mentoring opportunities for students. Leading students to small group involvement may lead to greater academic success but also to an increased retention rate.
