Excerpt from A Compendium Of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 3 Besides the truth should not be disguised, that times of agitation in Which ideas of a thousand different shapes have been cast into the midst of the ecclesiastical community, but have hardly yet been clearly ascertained with regard to their reasons, or their nature and value; times, in which the people has indeed arrived at the perception of its want, but not at its clear recognition or true expression, and in Which parties are seeking to Vindicate their own struggles as the people's Will: that such times are not adapted to great mixt assemblages, in'which deeply penetrating alterations in ecclesiastical institutions and relations should be brought under deliberation. Again ecclesiastical deliberations require above al] others, calm and dispassionate thoughtfulness it is equally disadvantageous, when on such occasions party determinations are past into law by agitation or by talent, as when a practical juste milieu fails to be attained by means of reciprocal limitations and concessions. This condition was accepted; and Otho, bifhop of Bamberg, a man of eminent piety and zeal, was fent, in the year 1124, minculcate and explain the doelrines of Chriflianity, mong that {uperllitious and barbarous people. Excerpt from A Compendium of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 1 Dr Gieseler's Compendium of Ecclesiastical History is marked by peculiar excellencies. It occupies an important position of its own. The text is very brief and condensed, marking the results at which the learned author has arrived; while the accumulated materials in the notes enable the reader to see at once the basis on which the statements of the text rest. If the student be not convinced of the correctness of the assertions made by the historian, he can easily draw his own conclusion by the help of what is presented to him. The work is characterised by immense research, and by striking impartiality. In the latter respect, indeed, the author has been blamed by some, his spirit of impartiality preventing him from expressing a decided opinion, where it would be desirable to throw the weight of his authority into the side of truth. There is also an air of dryness diffused over the work, inseparable perhaps from its exceeding brevity, but also indicating a deficiency in vivid sketching. The excellencies, however, far outweigh any minor faults that may be supposed to belong to it. Its rigid impartiality is its chief recommendation; and the abundant references and quotations in the notes supply the want of a library such as very few have within their reach.
