Book Description
Excerpt from A Companion to Classical d104s The more readable parts of this book have been delivered from time to time as lectures to the few among my pupils who care for such things. They are published, together with certain chapters which cannot claim to be easy reading, in the hope that the whole book will prove useful to a wider circle of students, - especially to those who, without wishing to become specialists in textual criticism, yet find that textual problems inevitably enter into their studies. Many people tend to regard textual criticism as a disease. But it is neither a disease nor a science, but simply the application of common sense to a class of problems which beset all inquirers whose evidence rests upon the authority of manuscript documents. And I shall be well content if I have succeeded in doing for the ordinary student of the classical and mediaeval writers what has been done so admirably for students of the New Testament by Sir Frederic Kenyon's Handbook to the d104ual Criticism of the New Testament and by Eberhard Nestle's Introduction to the d104ual Criticism of the Greek New Testament. The author of a manual of this kind is necessarily carried into many departments of learning where the credentials that he can exhibit are more than doubtful. Though I have endeavoured wherever possible to go back to the original authorities and have rarely quoted what I have not been able to verify, yet in a book which deals with so many questions of controversy and contains such a mass of references I am well aware that many errors may have escaped my notice. Book Description
Excerpt from A Companion to School Classics This little book is founded, in the main, on notes which I have from time to time dictated to my pupils. Its scope has thus been limited by practical considerations, which I have vaguely indicated by calling it, "A Companion to School Classics." By 'school classics' I mean classics with commentaries for use in schools, and by describing the book as a 'companion' to these, I mean that it attempts to give the information which a commentator is, from the nature of his task, compelled to assume even in a young student. There are subjects which are of constant and vital interest for very large groups of familiar authors. d104ual criticism is obviously one, the customs of the Theatre another. Similarly, the historians and orators can hardly be understood without a clear grasp of the Public Economy of Athens and Rome, and (not to mention Plato or Lucretius) Euripides, Aristophanes, Cicero, and Horace, teem with allusions to Philosophy. A commentary on a particular text cannot deal at large with these subjects, or any of them; neither does a dictionary, in which the articles are dislocated by their alphabetical order. In works of either kind, a vast mass of details is presented, but not the history or theory by which such details can be correlated, and through which they are most easily remembered. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Roman Classical Literature The history of Roman Classical Literature, although it comprehends the names of many illustrious writers and many voluminous works, is, chronologically speaking, contained within narrow limits. Dating from its earliest infancy, until the epoch when it ceased to deserve the title of classical, its existence occupies a period of less than four centuries.
