A coastal atmosphere-ocean coupled system (CAOCS) is developed with Princeton Ocean Model (POM) as the oceanic component, and with National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) regional climate model (RegCM2) as the atmospheric component. The model domain (98.84 121.16 E, 3.06 S 25.07 N) covers the whole SCS and surrounding land and islands. The surface fluxes of water, heat (excluding solar radiation), and momentum are applied synchronously with opposite signs in the atmosphere and ocean. Flux adjustments are not used. The CAOCS model was verified using an intensive airborne expendable bathythermograph (AXBT) survey between 14 25 May 1995 over the majority of the SCS down to about 300-m depth.

A Coastal air-ocean coupled system (CAOCS) that includes the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) as the ocean component and the Pennsylvania State University/National center for Atmospheric Research (PSU/NCAR) Mesoscale Model Fifth Generation (MM5) as the atmospheric component was developed for the east Asian marginal seas (EAMS) - a littoral environment that is a common operating area for the United States Navy (USN). CAOCS output verified against surface wind data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and sea surface temperature (SST)/Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) data collected from buoy stations. CAOCS output clearly shows the significance of atmospheric and oceanic Mesoscale features and their associated air-sea interaction processes such as coastal upwelling Ekman transport and enhancement of upward vertical motion during cyclogenesis. These Mesoscale features and air-sea interaction processes occur during periods prior to summer monsoon onset as well as during time periods following summer monsoon onset. The study provides support that CAOCS does perform well in forecasting EAMS surface current circulation SST/SSS structure surface wind stress and low-level atmospheric structure. Sone weaknesses of CAOCS were identified that will aid in future improvement of the model.

In Oct. 1985, 305 air-deployed expendable bathythermograph profiles were taken in a region of large-scale thermohaline steps. This report presents a map in the location of the staircase field during this time, contours of the depths of the 6 -26 C isotherms, and individual profile plots. Mesoscale flow patterns are inferred from the isotherm plots, and the location of the staircases in relation to the flow field is discussed. Improved temperature and depth conversion equations for AXBTs are summarized. These findings show that in fall 1985, the main body of the staircase field lay between 8 -12 N and 48 -59 W, and extended northward to nearly 19 N between 54 and 59 W. The mesoscale flow patterns indicate that during this period the North Equatorial Current entered the region from the east over a broad area north of 10 deg N. Much of the flow continued westward into the Caribbean, but the upper several hundred meters of the southern portion turned southward between 50 and 54 W and flowed back to the east.

The Southern Ocean has a critical influence on the global climate, and any long-term variability in the Southern Ocean can have both regional and global impacts significantly. However, sparse observations limit the study of the long-term variation. To test the quality of models simulating the natural sea surface temperature (SST) variability, the SST variability in the global oceans is evaluated in simulations of the Climate Model Intercomparison Project Phase 3 (CMIP3) and CMIP5 models. The result shows that some models demonstrate good skill in simulating the observed spatial structure of the SST variability in the tropical domains and less so in the extra-tropical domains. The CMIP5 ensemble exhibits some improvement over the CMIP3 ensemble, mostly in the tropical domains on SST variability simulation. Further, the spatial structure of the SST modes of the CMIP3 and CMIP5 super ensemble is more realistic than any single model, which is mostly used for the following study. Several SST leading modes in the Southern Ocean are discussed on decadal and even larger time scales using CMIP5 data set based on EOF analysis. We compare the modes against several simple null hypotheses, such as isotropic diffusion (red noise) and a Slab Ocean model, to investigate the sources of decadal variability and the factors affecting the propagation and decay of long-term anomalies. The result reveals that the annular mode with largest amplitudes in the Pacific, the basin-wide monopole mode and South Pacific dipole are the principle patterns with low-frequency variability, which contain the dual effects of internal intrinsic processes as well as external forcing and teleconnections. The annular mode is mostly affected by El NiƱo Southern Oscillation (ENSO) via teleconnection especially in the South Pacific domain and by local Southern Annular Mode (SAM) over the whole Southern Ocean. The monopole mode and South Pacific dipole mode, while they both demonstrate pronounced multi-decadal and longer time scales variability, are firstly inducted by the Wave-3 patterns in the atmosphere and further developed via ocean dynamics. The causes and characteristics of interannual-decadal SST variability in the Southern Ocean are further investigated with an ocean general circulation model and a simplified band ocean model. Possible factors are examined affecting the generation, propagation and decay of long-term anomalies with a series of sensitivity experiments. We found that the atmospheric forcing not only affects the SST modes on shorter time-scales directly, but also shows its influence on longer time scales via air-sea interaction, amplification and oceanic feedback. The deep mixed layer in the Southern Ocean is an essential element to maintain the long-term SST variability. The ocean dynamics connect the entire ocean and create the homogeneous-like spatial patterns. The ocean advection is the key factor to create SST spectral structure, which concentrates the spectrum on interannnual scale synchronizing with the transport of Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC).

From November 1977 to February 1978, thirteen round trips were flown aboard P-3 airplanes between Hawaii/Tahiti. The primary measurement program aboard these flights was the collection of air-expendable bathythermograph (AXBT) data along N/S flight tracks between 20 deg N and 17 deg S. Although flights were made as often as every other day for one week, the usual temporal sampling was once per week. A three-month time series of sixteen temperature sections was obtained along 150 deg W and a two-month series of ten sections was gathered from 158 deg W. This preliminary report displays the AXBT data collected during the P-3 flights. The text describes the methods and instrumentation used to collect the data, data processing, and finally the data display. Included are graphical presentations of each temperature section and various derived time series and statistical fields.
