Book Description
Tom Smith presents the story of his parents in his first historical fiction, Pursuit of Paradise. The novel vividly describes the years before, during, and after World War II. It begins in Texas and moves to the South Pacific, returning to Texas and moving westward to Arizona. He accurately traces the true events in the lives of Horace Smith and Juliette Hamilton in the short span of time between the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and their marriage in 1946. After extensive archival research of the 21st Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, Smith describes in meticulous detail the harshness of the Pacific War. He includes a day-by-day account of the brutal struggle for Breakneck Ridge on Leyte Island. He places the reader in the middle of the deadly tactics and the insufferable conditions that were among the most excruciating in military history. The reader experiences the Pacific War with Red Smith and his buddies, from the start of training to the end of combat. The reader lives through the occupation of Japan and the long trip back home, only to find an America that had undergone considerable change, with cities and shiftwork replacing the small farms that had dotted the landscapes of the past.

Book Description
A Street Called Darwin is based on a real individual: Charles Darwin Foard. This man grew up in southwestern Wisconsin, was drafted into the United States Army in 1941. He applied for and was accepted into the Army Air Corps, the forerunner of the present day United States Air Force. Darwin trained in Texas, learning how to fly a B-24 bomber. His first assignments were long-range bombing missions in the South Pacific against Japanese-held installations. He was killed in a tragic runway crash on Biak Island in 1944. While this book is about the military life of this remarkable young man, it also reveals his very human side as he interacts with family and acquaintances. The basis for this biography of Darwin is a collection of letters, photos and documents which were kept by his parents and relatives. The author came into their possession in 2007 and quickly discovered that there was a story that just had to be told.

Book Description
From a Three-Cornered World presents 60 poems by James Mitsui, 25 of them new. His poetry has, over two decades’ time and three previous volumes, asserted a strong and significant voice within the growing tradition of Asian American literature. Mitsui’s poems contain a family history of immigration to the Pacific Northwest from Japan and the assimilation of American culture over three generations, including the relocation of Japanese Americans during World War II. His vignettes of family life are gems of bittersweet humor and tenacious affection, revealing a deft and earthly poetic charm. Mitsui ranges over many subjects and deals with major themes in language that is spare yet lyrical, expressing historical insight in profoundly moving imagery.
