Book Description
Excerpt from A Biography of Francois Magendie Hopkins University devoted themselves to the study of the lives of several celebrated physiologists. At that time I under took to prepare a paper on the life and work of Francois Magen die. After revision, this paper was published in the Medical Library and Historical Journal (1906, iv, pp. 45-56, 198-206, 292-306, 364-377; 1907, v, pp. 24 As the result of a sug gestion of Mr. Albert T. Huntington, the editor of this Journal, some new material has been added to the biography and the whole is now published in the present volume. To write a really complete and satisfactory biography of Magendie, one should have read far more extensively in the literature of the time than I have done; but as it may never be my lot to take up this study again, I have thought it best to pub lish the work just as it is, in the hope that it may be of interest to the reader and afford a point of departure for the more elabo rate researches oi some future biographer. Book Description
Since it was first published in 1955, A Short History of Medicine has been hailed as the best available book of its kind: a concise and readable introduction to the history of medicine, written for students and professionals alike. In twenty short chapters, Ackerknecht traces the fascinating saga of man's progress in the science and art of medicine, from primitive times through early civilizations, classical antiquity, the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and into the mid-twentieth century. The struggles and triumphs of some of history's most renowned medical pioneers -- Hippocrates, Harvey, Jenner, Osler, and many more -- are here, but this is not a catalog of individual accomplishments. Ackerknecht strikes a balance between the history of medicine and its social and cultural background; between medical science and medical practice; and between clinical and preventative medicine, illuminating not only the world of medicine but the position of medicine in the world. --

Book Description
This book is the first attempt to provide a basis for the interaction of the brain and nervous system with painting, music and literature. The introduction deals with the problems of creativity and which parts of the brain are involved. Then an overview of art presents the multiple facets, such as anatomy, and the myths appearing in ancient descriptions of conditions such as polio and migraine. The neurological basis of painters like Goya and van Gogh is analysed. Other chapters in the section on art cover da Vinci's mechanics and the portrayal of epilepsy. The section on music concerns the parts of the brain linked to perception and memory, as well as people who cannot appreciate music, and the effect of music on intelligence and learning (the Mozart effect). The section on literature relates to Shakespeare, Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, James Joyce and the poetry of one of England's most famous neurologists, Henry Head./a
