The word primitive is fundamental to the discipline of architecture in the west, providing a convenient starting point for the many myths of architecture's origins. Since the almost legendary 1970s conference on the Primitive, with the advent of post-modernism and, in particular, post-colonialism, the word has fallen from favour in many disciplines. Despite this, architects continue to use the word to mythologize and reify the practice of simplicity. Primitive includes contributions from some of today’s leading architectural commentators including Dalibor Vesely, Adrian Forty, David Leatherbarrow, Richard Weston and Richard Coyne. Wide-ranging essays making up the first major study of Nietzsche and the classical tradition in a quarter of a century. This volume collects a wide-ranging set of essays examining Friedrich Nietzsche's engagement with antiquity in all its aspects. It investigates Nietzsche's reaction and response to the concept of "classicism," with particular reference to his work on Greek culture as a philologist in Basel and later as a philosopher of modernity, and to his reception of German classicism in all his texts. The book should be of interest to students of ancient history and classics, philosophy, comparative literature, and Germanistik. Taken together, these papers suggest that classicism is both a more significant, and a more contested, concept for Nietzsche than is often realized, and it demonstratesthe need for a return to a close attention to the intellectual-historical context in terms of which Nietzsche saw himself operating. Rafael Vinoly became famous as the architect of the stunning Tokyo International Forum (1989-1996). In Japan, where land is at a premium and public spaces are rare, the Forum with its 2.7 hectares and unusual design of public space, was widely admired. Originating in Uruguay, Vinoly heads an architectural office with an impressive list of projects in the areas of architecture, urban planning and interior design, including significant buildings such as the Philadelphia Regional Performing Arts Center which opened recently, Princeton University Stadium, the New Bronx Supreme Criminal Court Complex. This book documents a large number of Vinoly's most significant buildings and projects.
