The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia, of which Kentucky was a part. In 1940, this "First Census" of Kentucky: 1790, was published, being developed from tax lists from the nine counties which comprised the entire State in 1790. Individuals are listed alphabetically, and following each name is the county of residence and the date of the return. The cumulative returns for Kentucky are included on page one. Also included at the end of the book are the "Land and Tax List of King George County [VA], 1782;" "Personal Tax List of Fayette County, 1788;" "Personal Tax List No. 2 of Fayette County, 1787;" "Land Tax List of Prince William County [VA], 1784;" and the "Land Tax List of Charles City County, 1787." Descendants of three brothers, William, Joseph Franklin and Robert David Early, who first came to Knox County, Kentucky in 1801-1803. They moved to Sullivan Co., Tennessee and later moved back to Knox County, Kentucky. 1. William Early (1776-1813) was born in Washington Co., Virginia. He married Hannah Laughlin (1779-ca. 1863), daughter of John Jr. and Mary Price Laughlin, 1802 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. Hannah married (2) James Helton (d. 1851) 1816 in Knox Co., Ky. They divorced 1837. 2. Joseph Franklin Early (1779-1845) was born in Washington Co., Va. He married Elizabeth Pemberton (1787-1861), daughter of William and Nancy Sherwood Pemberton, 1805 in Washington Co., Va. He was appoin- ted to Lieutenant Colonel, and Commander, State of Kentucky Militia of Knox County in 1814. 3. Robert David Early was possibly a twin of Joseph Franklin Early. He married Elizabeth Dryden, daughter of David III and Mary Buchanan Dryden in 1810. They lived in or near Bristol, Tennessee in 1811. They returned to Knox Co. in 1818. He died 1844 in Whitley Co., Ky. Descendants live in Kentucky, Indiana, Texas, Washington and else- where.

Appointed by Abraham Lincoln to the U.S. Supreme Court during the Civil War, Samuel Freeman Miller (1816--1890) served on the nation's highest tribunal for twenty-eight tumultuous years and holds a place in legal history as one of the Court's most influential justices. Michael A. Ross creates a colorful portrait of a passionate man grappling with the difficult legal issues arising from a time of wrenching social and political change. He also explores the impact President Lincoln's Supreme Court appointments made on American constitutional history. Best known for his opinions in cases dealing with race and the Fourteenth Amendment, particularly the 1873 Slaughter-House Cases, Miller has often been considered a misguided opponent of Reconstruction and racial equality. In this major reinterpretation, Ross argues that historians have failed to study the evolution of Miller's views during the war and explains how Miller, a former slaveholder, became a champion of African Americans' economic and political rights.
