La optometría es una ciencia que en Colombia inicia a comienzos del siglo XX con profesionales de Europa y Norteamérica formados en el campo de la óptica y con conceptos básicos sobre refracción. En 1954, mediante el Decreto Ley 0825 del 23 de marzo, se modifica el campo de acción de la optometría con características de profesión autónoma, independiente y de proyección social. Casi medio siglo después se reglamenta nuevamente el ejercicio profesional (Ley 372 de 1997), expresando que la optometría es una profesión de la salud que requiere título de idoneidad universitario, basado en una formación científica, técnica y humanística. De esta manera, la actividad del optómetra incluye acciones de prevención y corrección de las enfermedades del ojo y del sistema visual por medio del examen, diagnóstico, tratamiento y adecuado manejo que permitan lograr la eficiencia visual y la salud ocular del paciente, sin descuidar el reconocimiento y diagnóstico de las manifestaciones sistémicas que tienen relación con el ojo, para así preservar y mejorar la calidad de vida del individuo y de la comunidad. La optometría presenta dos ejes para el ejercicio profesional: uno teórico, que proporciona al profesional los fundamentos referentes a las funciones ópticas, visuales y oculares, y uno práctico, que lo capacita en el área clínica. Por lo tanto, es indispensable para el optómetra tener las herramientas básicas que lo guíen y orienten en la integración de estos dos ejes, así como es de gran utilidad establecer, dentro de lo posible, la unificación en la realización de las pruebas clínicas. Por lo anterior, este libro surge con la misión de orientar al estudiante en el por qué, el para qué y el cómo de cada una de las 156 técnicas optométricas que se desarrollan en detalle.
