Book Description
This book consists of a collection of papers on specific issues centred around three broad areas of scholarly interest: native language analysis, foreign language acquisition and training, and cultural and literary studies. It provides a concise snapshot of the multiplicity of vantage points from which language, literature and culture-related phenomena can be studied and accounted for. The unifying principle behind the variety of issues and approaches illustrated here is the overarching notion of Englishness treated as an object of intellectual inquiry (with a focus on the English-speaking communities, their cultures, English-based creole languages) and as a repository of methodological blueprints applicable in explorations of other languages and cultures. The authors of the articles included in this volume are academics and junior researchers who, on the occasion of the 10th Conference on British and American Studies, convened to share their ideas and pave the way for further work in intersecting research areas subsumed under linguistics, sociolinguistics, and cultural studies.

Book Description
This book includes a selection of papers in linguistics presented at the 14th Conference on British and American Studies. Its tripartite structure reflects the main topics around which the nineteen contributions cluster. The first part, “Native language profiling: explorations and findings”, displays a variety of methodological approaches aimed at highlighting syntactic, morphological, and lexico-semantic aspects of, primarily, English and Romanian. The papers in the second section, “Aspects of language change, bilingualism, and cross-linguistic variation”, bring to the fore some of the topical issues falling within the ambit of language contact, such as mixed languages, bilingualism, and code-switching, as well as contrastive investigations of language structure. The research strand in the final part, “Meaning and communication within and across cultures”, relates to lexico-pragmatic inquiries into the construction of meaning, focusing on the “language beyond language”, as well as on the extent to which the lexical and pragmatic repertoires of various languages can be made to overlap.

Book Description
By bringing the concepts of “identity,” “comparativism,” and “communication” together, this volume invites a reinterpretation of these defining concepts of postmodernism. Composed of contributions from Australia, Azerbaijan, Japan, Romania and the Ukraine, this interdisciplinary and intercultural book investigates the multiple identities activated in broader discursive contexts. This collection of nineteen chapters opens with an introductory overview followed by two parts: the first, focusing on Plural identities and comparativism, contains a series of “case studies” that can be subsumed within imagology and comparativism; the second, Communication and discourse, illustrates two directions of research: literary communication and terminology. In spite of the methodological and thematic polyphony of its contributions, the volume adopts a unified and coherent tone. By integrating the study of contextual and discursive identities, this book will be of interest to all those involved in image and literary studies, in both linguistics and culture.

Book Description
This book represents a selection of papers presented by academics and researchers at the 12th Conference on British and American Studies. They are grouped in two main theme clusters, corresponding to the two chapters of the book: Languages in Contact and Languages in Use and Multidisciplinarity and Multiculturalism in Literary Studies. In the first section, language is described, in turn, as subject to influence by other language systems, as an object of learning and acquisition, and as an instrument enabling users to bridge between cultures, disciplinary domains, and people. The second part of the volume is mainly concerned with such notions as hybridity, tolerance, identity, subversion and deconstruction, as reflected in classical and contemporary Anglo-American literary texts.

Book Description
For nearly a century of being underestimated as a literary genre, the short story is currently experiencing a revival. The editors of this collection of articles have brought together the contributions of nine outstanding scholars in the field of the short story to reveal some of the many directions in which the genre is expanding. This book is a reasoned and well-documented anthology which casts light on new aspects of the short story. It participates in the current trend of short story criticism, characterized by the gathering in one single volume of a diversity of approaches with the main aim of promoting discussion on this thriving area of literary studies. The editors of this volume believe that a fruitful tension may rise by putting side by side insights into a not so well known tradition, on the one hand, and fresh considerations on unexpected developments of the short story, on the other. All in all, the short story emerges as a dynamic and flexible form that reacts and adapts itself better than any other literary genre to the challenges of the sceptical times we live in.

Book Description
This book explores the dynamic intersections where cultures, languages and spaces converge, shaping identities and creating new forms of expression. The authors attempt to unravel the complexity of narrative and imaginative spaces by examining cultural identities in global contexts. The essays on literary representations consider abstract border crossings through rewriting and reappropriation in various genres, while also looking at immigrant fiction, post-Anthropocene narratives and hybrid spaces through a postcolonial lens. The essays on history and politics critically examine identity conflicts in the United States, while the contributions on applied linguistics and language pedagogy offer insights into online teaching experiences during COVID-19, sociocultural aspects of language use and the formation of bilingual identities. Employing innovative methods in reinterpreting literary works, political narratives and different types of discourse, past and present, this collection contributes to ongoing scholarly dialogues on the multifaceted challenges associated with identity construction through border crossings.

Book Description
This volume highlights the ways in which recent developments in corpus linguistics and natural language processing can engage with topics across language studies, humanities and social science disciplines. New approaches have emerged in recent years that blur disciplinary boundaries, facilitated by factors such as the application of computational methods, access to large data sets, and the sharing of code, as well as continual advances in technologies related to data storage, retrieval, and processing. The “march of data” denotes an area at the border region of linguistics, humanities, and social science disciplines, but also the inevitable development of the underlying technologies that drive analysis in these subject areas. Organized into 3 sections, the chapters are connected by the underlying thread of linguistic corpora: how they can be created, how they can shed light on varieties or registers, and how their metadata can be utilized to better understand the internal structure of similar resources. While some chapters in the volume make use of well-established existing corpora, others analyze data from platforms such as YouTube, Twitter or Reddit. The volume provides insight into the diversity of methods, approaches, and corpora that inform our understanding of the “border regions” between the realms of data science, language/linguistics, and social or cultural studies.
