Book Description
Weird and wacky or safe and sound? The Sokolsky Opening is both. Sometimes the play is truly deviant both sides initial few moves all on the a-b-c files and the first pieces exchanged a pair of rooks at other times 1.b4 becomes merely a roundabout route to a respectable English, Reti, King s Indian or reversed French position. This book, packed with fresh analysis and 95 illustrative games, clearly shows that White can look forward to a rewarding albeit complex or unusual struggle. There s no need to dwell on the usual platitudes applied interchangeably to unorthodox openings, like a good psychological choice to get your opponent into unfamiliar territory. The Sokolsky, otherwise known as the Orangutan or the Polish Attack, is an independent opening whose merits are due to chess analysis not psychoanalysis. 1.b4 is sound, the refutations don t work, assessments are disputed, printed theory till now has been inadequate, White s aims are clear, and the practitioners have been world class. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and hit your opponents with the b-pawn!

500 Orangutan Games
Author: Bill Wall

ISBN:

Languages : en
Pages : 178
Book Description
The Orangutan Opening (1.b4) is also more commonly known as the Polish Opening or Sokolsky's Opening. The Orangutan got its name after the Polish player Savielly Tartakower (1887-1956) visited the Bronx Zoo during the 1924 New York International Tournament. He was impressed by an orangutan named Suzanna at the zoo and decided to dedicate his next game to her. Tartakower noted that the climbing motion of the pawn to b4 and to b5 reminded him of the orangutan. In round 4, Tartakower played 1.b4 against Géza Maróczy (1870-1951) and drew after 57 moves. In 1903, Nikolai Bugayev (1837-1903), a prominent Russian mathematician, published his analyses of this opening in the Russian magazine Shakmatnoye Obozreniyi. In the 1930s, Soviet master Alexei Pavlovich Sokolsky (1908-1969) began analyzing and playing this opening in the USSR. In 1953, Sokolsky defeated grandmaster Salo Flohr (1908-1983) in Moscow with this opening. In 1963, he published his opening monograph Debyut 1.b2-b4.The idea of this irregular opening is for White to fianchetto his queen bishop onto the b2 square to control the a1-h8 diagonal. White also tries to prevent Black from expanding on the queenside as White gains mire spatial advantage on the queenside. Black has many options to control the center and start his own attack. Both sides have many tactical threats and good attacking chances. This book has 500 illustrative and decisive games based on the opening 1.b4. Slight annotations have been added to each game. Diagrams have been added to the most critical positions of some interesting games. This instructive and entertaining collection of games arising from the Orangutan Opening will be of interest to those players who like unusual openings. Have fun!

A Simple Chess Opening Repertoire for White
Author: Sam Collins
Publisher: Gambit Publications
ISBN: 9781910093825
Category : Chess
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
By carefully choosing variations that lead to similar structures, IM Sam Collins has put together a powerful repertoire book ideal for players with limited study time. White opens with 1 e4 and develops his pieces to natural squares, seeking open lines and the initiative. The dominant theme of this sound and active repertoire is that - where reasonable - White seeks out Isolated Queen Pawn (IQP) positions: i.e. with the c3 Sicilian, Panov Caro-Kann, Tarrasch French, and the Italian Game with early c3 and d4. There are no speculative gambits here, just plenty of healthy aggression and new ideas. Because so many of Collins's recommendations lead to familiar structures, ideas can easily be transplanted from one opening to another. He gives illustrative games that emphasize the key themes, including White's many opportunities to forcibly weaken and attack the black king. The specific analysis is up-to-the-minute and features ideas that have proven their worth in grandmaster practice. Throughout there is attention to move-order subtleties, with clever nuances in 'sidelines' that your opponents are unlikely to have examined in detail. Irish international master Sam Collins won the championship of his home country in 2002 and 2014. He has represented Ireland in numerous Olympiads, winning an individual gold medal at Bled in 2002. He is also an experienced chess teacher who has lectured at the Berkeley Chess School in California. His previous books for Gambit were Chess Explained: The c3 Sicilian and the highly successful general opening work Understanding the Chess Openings.
