Book Description
The book is centred on a fascinating personality, a Western Siberian indigenous poet, reindeer herder and ecological activist, who, in his 40s, made the choice to live in the forest with reindeer. There, he struggled with oil giant LUKoil to ensure his reindeer the possibility to live. A series of essays reflect on his awareness and construction of self and culture, his complex relations with the oil industry, and his native spirituality. It presents insights into what it means to be an indigenous intellectual in post-Soviet Russia at the beginning of the 21st century. Yuri Vella (1948-2013) is not an ordinary representative of his people, but he shows one of the possible forms indigenous leadership could take in Russia, if it aims at giving indigenous peoples the possibility in the near and far future to shape a sustainable relation to nature and their neighbours.

Solutions of Reaction Rate Equations Pertaining to Electron Irradiation of 4:1 Mixtures of N2 and O2
Author: Frankline E. Niles

ISBN:
Category : Atmosphere
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
One of the Keneshea computer codes (see AD-424 173) was adapted for use on the Ballistic Research Laboratories Electronic Scientific Computer. Using this modified code, reaction rate equations were solved for the following 15 species: e, NO2( - ), O( - ), O2( - ), O3( - ), N2(+), NO(+), O(+), O2(+), N, NO, N2O, NO2, O, and O3. The calculations were made for a 4:1 mixture of N2 and O2 at 1 torr total pressure and 300K. Rate constants as given by Keneshea and Fowler (see AD-646 975) were used. The solutions are presented as number densities versus time after the start of the irradiating electron beam. A description of the modified code is presented. (Author).

A Solution to the Reaction Rate Equations in the Atmosphere Below 150 Kilometers
Author: Thomas J. Keneshea
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Chemical kinetics
Languages : en
Pages : 142
Book Description
One way to acquire a better understanding of the formation and destruction of ionization in the atmosphere is through the solution of the system of time-dependent reaction rate equations. These ordinary differential equations form a simultaneous set each question of which describes the time rate of change of a particular atmospheric constituent. In the general problem, all the molecules and atoms whether neutral, charged, or excited, as well as the free electrons would be included. A computer program is presented for developing the numerical solution to this problem. The method of solution of the set of equations uses a fourth order Runge Kutta integration with a variable mesh. When a species enters its quasi-equilibrium state, its differential equation is removed from the set and its equilibrium equation is inserted into the simultaneous algebraic set. The algebraic set is solved by the method of successive substitutions. The over-all solution is obtained by iteration between the differential and the algebraic sets. The ability of the computer program to develop extensive solutions is demonstrated by several examples taken under different conditions.

Shamanic Dialogues with the Invisible Dark in Tuva, Siberia
Author: Konstantinos Zorbas
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527566226
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 125
Book Description
Intentional acts of “assault sorcery”, involving operations of extracting the souls of unsuspecting victims or eliminating one’s antagonists, are central to the perceived proliferation of occult threats and shamanic assassins in Tuva, Siberia. Following the restoration of shamanism as an official religion in the region, indigenous spiritual practitioners have propagated a vindictive strand of rituals, associated with supernatural retaliation and political assassination. This book probes the unforeseen implications of state-sanctioned appropriations of religious revival, through an unsettling context of encounters with various agencies embodying “dark shamanism”. The invisible presence of this shamanic complex is manifested in the book’s presentation of a shaman’s thoughts about an epidemic of curses, his counter-cursing rituals for Russians and ethnic Tuvans, and his dialogues with dead shamanic ancestors and spectres experiencing ideological tensions.
