Book Description
Spontaneous Generation is a story about coming of age in the Sixties (which, of course, oozed into the Seventies)—an American story, both individual and collective, about love and politics, mirrors and passages. I began writing it in 1972, while it was still happening thick and fast ... and didn’t get around to finishing it until 2005, when I’d reached the age at which remembering becomes easier than doing. The story concerns a girl stuck in right field, a descent into an outhouse, male hair, Free Air, flag tattoos, and what happens to things we think we’ve gotten rid of.

Book Description
"The Onion is laugh-out-loud, go-tell-your-friends, get-angry-you-didn't-think-of-it funny." -Conan O'Brien "Outside of maybe Dario Fo, an Italian who few are sure exists, the Onion people make the most consistently perfect and excoriating social commentary we currently have. But will those Nobel bastards honor them, too? Only God, our merciless and just God, knows." -Dave Eggers "The funniest publication in the United States." -The New Yorker "This publication is tasteless and destructive to our shared values. Read it for yourself and you'll see what I mean. Seriously, what else could make me laugh-much less laugh uproariously-while being offended week after week after week?" -Al Gore "The Onion is the funniest thing in news since Dan Rather's spooky stare." -Matt Groening "Brutal satire that rushes into the far reaches of race, class, sexuality, and culture where many publications-and critics-fear to tread." -Chicago Tribune "The Onion, unlike any other entity in our media culture, offers a refreshingly honest look at our complicated life." -Ken Burns

Book Description
Building on her groundbreaking work in Writing Superheroes, Anne Dyson traces the influence of a wide-ranging set of “textual toys” from children’s lives—church and hip–hop songs, rap music, movies, TV, traditional jump-rope rhymes, the words of professional sports announcers and radio deejays—upon school learning and writing. Wonderfully rich portraits of five African American first–graders demonstrate how children’s imaginative use of wider cultural symbols enriches their school learning. Featuring lively and engaging vignettes of children who are often left behind by our educational system, this book: Provides a detailed view of written language development from inside a particular childhood culture.Shows that children bring a rich folk culture to school and demonstrates how they “remix” their cultural references to accommodate school tasks such as writing.Turns the traditional educational view inside out by starting from inside a child’s culture and looking out toward the demands of school, rather than starting on the outside of the child and looking in.Provides concrete examples of how children’s cultural literacy practices translate into classroom practices and, in turn, into practices of academic success. “The most significant work that has ever been done in this area. It is superior in every respect and Anne Dyson writes like a dream.” —Tom Newkirk, University of New Hampshire “This book is unique in that it features students who draw on the cultural experiences of the Black church, sister and brother play–family games, rap, and Black popular music. It should be ideal in courses on literacy learning.” — Arnetha Ball, School of Education, Stanford University

Book Description
In this sizzling, exciting novel, four women show that age is just a number by seeking out new forms of pleasure, love, and romance. Whether it’s getting a tattoo, using whips and chains, or preparing dinner in nothing but stilettos, four divas—all best friends and over fifty years old—decide that they need to spice up their love lives. And they’re willing to go to any length to achieve that. So Emma, Queenie, Yolanda, and Connie set out to get the pleasure they crave. For Emma, that means rekindling her sex life with her doting husband, whom she decides to take care of for once. Yolanda, who is still turning heads and could have anyone she wants, finally meets a man who suits her tastes—but can she suit his? Queenie, who is fifty-eight and divorced, entertains her on-again, off-again male friend one night when he’s lucky enough to get his hands on some Viagra. And Connie, who has never been married, is in love with a man who won’t put a ring on her finger. Will she be able to convince him to marry her, or, more importantly, does she even want that herself? As things start heating up, the ladies’ lives get sexier...and more complicated. Soon, the four divas soon face more drama than they bargained for...
