National Sovereignty and International Organizations
Author: Martin Martinez
Publisher: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers
ISBN: 9004634681
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 376
Book Description
This book deals with the question of national sovereignty and States' participation in International Organizations, whether traditional or supranational ones. Although there has been much discussion on the problems posed by the transference of sovereignty, this volume provides an original insight in that transfer of state sovereignty is approached as a dynamic process that can be divided into three different phases. Part one, called `the initial phase', focuses on the examination of the domestic legal basis for the transfer of state sovereignty. Part two, `the transfer phase', investigates how the process of transfer evolves within the core of two International Organizations: the United Nations and the European Communities. Part three, `the post-transfer phase', analyses the States' responses to the effects and consequences of the transfer of sovereignty.

Isolated States
Author: Deon Geldenhuys
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521402682
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 788
Book Description
This book examines a largely neglected phenomenon in the field of international relations--the concept of the isolated state. Deon Geldenhuys begins by discussing how he measures both voluntary and enforced international isolation by, among other things, membership of international organizations, official visits and international censure. He then presents a number of case studies of self-isolation. The remainder of the study is devoted to an analysis of the enforced isolation of Taiwan, Israel, Chile and South Africa. Using a wealth of statistical material, he demonstrates their varying degrees of isolation in the diplomatic, military, economic and socio-cultural arenas of the international community.

The Constitutional Foundations of World Peace
Author: Richard A. Falk
Publisher: SUNY Press
ISBN: 9780791413449
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 406
Book Description
This book shows how significant a worldwide constitutional framework can be, both analytically and politically, in efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace. The authors are careful to avoid the pitfalls of legalism and moralism that have often afflicted discussion of world governance in the past, and their analyses are rooted directly within contemporary human struggles for peace, justice, prosperity, and environmentally sustainable societies. The authors demonstrate that when these struggles are examined in light of the planets changing constitutional framework, their origins and future trajectories are more fathomable intellectually. By examining alternative images of world order, these authors uncover an abundance of practical yet bold policy recommendations for addressing and solving global problems. They also demonstrate that implementing desirable policies can indeed become politically feasible. This book is a compendium of new ideas for managing threats to peace, enhancing U. N. peacekeeping, establishing an effective global environmental authority, aiding the faltering global economy, nurturing the growth of democracy both locally and globally, protecting human rights and ethnic diversity, holding governments and intergovernmental organizations accountable to those they govern, and nurturing humanitarian values among all people.

International Organizations and Global Civil Society
Author: Daniel Laqua
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 135005562X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 277
Book Description
The Union of International Associations (UIA) was founded in 1910, aiming to coordinate the relations and interests of international organizations across the world. Its long history makes it a prism through which to study the field of international organizations and its dynamics. Bringing together experts from fields including history, political science and international relations, architecture, historical sociology, digital humanities and information studies, International Organizations and Global Civil Society is the first scholarly book to cover both the UIA's early years and its more recent past. Key issues explored include the UIA's importance for the field of scientific internationalism, the relations between the UIA and other international organizations, and the changing position of the UIA when facing geopolitical challenges such as totalitarianism, the World Wars and the Cold War. This important book addresses a number of current scholarly concerns: the concept of "global civil society"; the development of international relations as a field of study; the investigation of transnational factors in modern and contemporary history; and the tracing of forerunners to the "information society".
