COMPLICATIONS IN LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY
Author: Eddy Hartono, MD, FICS.
Publisher: RIZMEDIA PUSTAKA INDONESIA
ISBN: 6238050160
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 84
Book Description
Since the first laparoscopic appendectomy in September 1980, laparoscopy had been adapted to other type of surgery including gynaecology. Gynaecological laparoscopy was firstly introduced by European physicians Raoul Palmer and Has Frangenheim. It initially was used for both diagnostic and therapy purposes like tubal ligation.1 Along with the further development of operation technique, laparoscopy has been used in more complicated gynaecological surgery due to its offered advantages such as smaller wound, faster recovery time, better outcomes and accuracy. The human body's anatomy has not altered. However, advances in surgical techniques and the handling of complications are required due to technological advancements in operating materials and processes. Laparoscopy differs fundamentally from other operating techniques in that the initial entry is typically carried out while the patient is blind. Blind entrance can harm organs or vessels, especially in people who have had surgery in the past. One of the challenges with the entry is the potential for damage to go undetected for some time, requiring significant abdominal surgery. The development of surgical tools and methods has also made it possible for the surgeon to use the laparoscopic approach for even significant surgeries. This has a good correlation with new learning curves. 1,2 With its well-established advantages of minimizing blood loss, reducing post-operative pain, and shortening hospital stays, laparoscopic surgery has transformed patient care. Some of its unique characteristics in compared to open surgery include the use of a pneumoperitoneum, a minimally invasive entry into the belly, and the insertion of straight stick tools through tiny ports. These traits do, however, come with a special set of risks, such as haemodynamic instability, visceral injury, blood vessel damage, and problems related to poor ergonomics. However, the risk of complication such as wound infection, vomit, nausea, abdominal infection and septicaemia can’t be eliminated. Laparoscopic surgeries frequently involve the use of electrosurgery. The lengthier instruments are inserted through a trocar, which may be composed of plastic, metal,

Geriatric Anesthesiology
Author: J. G. Reves
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319668781
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 509
Book Description
Surgical and anesthetic techniques have evolved to allow a growing number of older adults to undergo surgery, and current estimates are that 50% of Americans over the age of 65 years old will have an operation. However, as the knowledge regarding perioperative care of the elderly surgical patient grows, so do the questions. In this edition, each chapter includes a section entitled “Gaps in Our Knowledge,” meant to highlight areas in which research is needed, as well as hopefully inspire readers to begin solving some of these questions themselves. Building upon the strong foundation of the first two editions, Geriatric Anesthesiology, 3rd edition also assembles the most up-to-date information in geriatric anesthesia and provides anesthesiologists with important new developments.Topics covered include several new chapters that reflect the evolution of multidisciplinary geriatric care throughout the perioperative continuum, as well as the growing body of literature related to prehabilitation. In addition, discussion of the surgeon’s perspective and geriatrician’s perspective on surgery in the geriatric population is covered, as well as the systematic physiologic changes associated with aging and the pharmacologic considerations for the geriatric patient undergoing procedures. Finally, the last section discusses postoperative care specific to the geriatric population, including acute pain management, ICU management, recent evidence and up-to-date practice regarding delirium and postoperative cognitive dysfunction, and palliative care.

Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400942516
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 296
Book Description
Theodore H. Stanley, M.D. W. Clayton Petty, M.D. Anesthesiology 1986 contains the Refresher Course manuscripts of the presentations of the 31st Annual Postgraduate Course in Anesthesiology which took place at the Westin Hotel Utah Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, February 14-18, 1986. The chapters reflect recent and future developments in anesthetic techniques, monitoring instruments and devices, and anesthetic drugs. The purposes of the textbook are to 1) act as a reference for the anesthesiologists attending the meeting, and 2) serve as a vehi cl e to bri ng many of the 1 atest concepts in anesthesiology to others within a short time of the formal presentation. Each chapter is a brief but sharply focused glimpse of the interests in anesthesi a expressed at the conference. Thi s book and its chapters should not be considered complete treatises on the subjects addressed but rather attempts to summarlze the most salient points. This textbook is the fourth in a continuing series documenting the proceedings of the Postgraduate Course in Salt Lake City. We hope that this and the past and future volumes reflect the rapid and continuing evolution of anesthesiology in the late twentieth century.
