In 1910 the value added to the raw material by the varied manufactures of the State amounted to considerably more than For the same period the Bureau of the Census report shows that the sale of farm products reached a value of and that the minerals produced, exclusive of clay products, an estimated value of $159, 000, 000. Manufacturing, therefore, is preeminently Ohio's leading industry. The present report deals with a single class of factories, those manufacturing commodities from wood. They form one of the most important divisions of Ohio's enterprises, and nearly every State in the Union as well as many foreign countries send some portion of their forest material to Ohio for utilization in manu facture. Book Description
Excerpt from Ohio's Forests and Wood-Using Industries The estimates of forest area, timber volume, and growth reported here are higher than previous estimates indicated. Moreover, the statistics that follow show that Ohio timber stands are now. Growing faster than they are being cut. The differences are partly due to inclusion of more lightly forested areas in the recent survey. Standards of merchantability have changed to include material that would not have been harvested 10 or 15 years ago. The differences also reflect the tree planting and the actual increase in timber volume during the period. Because of the changing standards this increase cannot be accurately measured. Book Description
Excerpt from Ohio's Timber Harvest Revealed in Stumps Timber is an important resource in Ohio, and cutting records are an essential part of a forest resource appraisal. However, finding out just how much timber is cut in the State during any one year is a big job. Occasionally in the past, wood-using industries have been surveyed to determine the volume cut by species and product, but the variety of industries, the large number of small Operations (including individual farmers) and lack of systematic records at small mills, makes an industry production survey difficult and costly. Production varies from year to year, so an industry survey for a particular year may not be representative. Moreover, an industry survey does not give direct information on size of timber cut, acreage cutover, source of the timber, or kind of stand from which timber came. These difficulties have prompted consideration of other ways to obtain cutting information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Small Woodland Owner in Ohio Forest land owners in the hill counties are interested in forestry. One reason for this is that wood-using markets are active in the hill region. Owners can sell small and low-quality timber as well as high-quality sawlogs. Pasturing of wood lands is not important to these owners. And because of the low value of the land, the owners do not feel so much pressure to obtain an immediate return. Hence, there is a good opportunity to carry out a successful forestry program in this area where few alternative land-use opportunities exist. Moreover, forest acreage in the hill area is likely to increase because farmland is being abandoned and allowed to revert to trees. Many owners in the hill area who indicate that they are holding the land to grow timber, are just letting the stands grow without benefit of any silvicultural treatment. It is generally conceded that better management of these stands could at least double growth and increase quality. Ownership of the forest land by individuals, corporations, or cooperative organizations who will practice forestry should be encouraged. To do this, forestry programs need to be strengthened 'in the hill area. Too many owners are unaware ofthe programs and services available to them. Much of this land is held by owners who are willing to sell if they could retain mineral rights and home sites.
