Book Description
Gambling like any other addiction is overpowering, it can and will drive you to insanity. If you have not succumbed to insanity it just might cause you to consider committing a crime to obtain finances so you may continue with your addiction to gamble; thus leading you closer to the gates of prison or worse yet death. I came much to close to getting arrested for a felony like a few of my sisters. I have tried and failed at committing suicide on three different occasions. There are those brothers and sisters in the fellowship who have succeeded at suicide. You just might go so far as to embezzle funds from your employer. There are those sisters who have spent time incarcerated for their crimes, and yet others are still in prison. A quote taken from my Gamblers Anonymous handbook states: The persistence of this illusion is astonishing. Many pursue it into the gates of prison, insanity or death. My choice was life over death, sanity over insanity, and the thought of prison scares me. My life free from gambling, the love of God and family is far more important to me to ignore. After seven plus years of frenzied, uncontrollable, insanity I have turned my life over to my Higher Power, my God, Jesus Christ. He has helped me through all my adversity, above all else He has restored my love for Him and family. Gambling is described as one of the most baffling and insidious addictions that can never be cured but it can most definitely be arrested through diligent, hard work in the Gamblers Anonymous Program. Two words in my vocabulary, baffling and insidious remind me what gambling will do to you. The word baffle in my dictionary is described as: frustrate, thwart, foil, and perplex. The meaning of the word insidious enthralls me the most: ambush, sly, treacherous, seductive and the meaning that tears at my heart the most, is having a gradual and cumulative effect: subtle. As the snake slithers through the grass seeking its prey for food, so does gambler seek funds to feed their addiction to gamble. Unfortunately, the gamblers addiction is a slow subtle and treacherous deterioration unbeknownst especially to the gambler herself. Gambling will perplex you, it will frustrate you and above all it will thwart every emotion you possess. It will turn you into that slithering snake! You will become enthralled by anger, greed and hatred. You will destroy everything good in you. If you are suffering from a gambling addiction reach out for help through Gamblers Anonymous, grasp the program with all your might, and take it to heart for it may just save your life

Book Description
The article you are about to read is my overwhelming desire to express my thoughts on the subject of controlled gamblers vs. the compulsive gamblers. Gambling appears to be providing a very lucrative source of income for the United States and other states besides Nevada and New Jersey. Gambling was introduced to Atlantic City back in the later part of the nineteen seventies. In addition, there is world wide gambling that is enjoyed by vacationers or via the internet (extremely addictive). Several gamblers can control their gambling and can stop. However, there are those gamblers who “cannot” control their desire to gamble and become “Compulsive Gamblers.”

Book Description

How can we gain insight into and mastery of ourselves? Entering the world of the great philosophers and engaging with them, we become aware of what we are capable of becoming. They speak to us of themselves and the good life and thereby offer the possibility for self-development.

While this sounds like psychology, it is what the ancient Greeks called moral philosophy and its main precept is 'know oneself'. To know oneself is to embrace one's personal power.

From Socrates to Sartre, from Plato to postmodernism, philosophers have important things to say about the personal power that underpins human existence. This book discusses ten philosophical perspectives, or worldviews, which present original ideas capable of evoking in us values that are guidelines for personal conduct. Harmonising knowledge, values and conduct maximises our personal power and thereby enables us to solve the practical and psychological problems of human existence, or overcome those that cannot be solved.

The philosophers discussed in this book embody ideas of considerable fascination and force which can change our lives by penetrating the illusions of appearance and the delusions of common sense. As philosophy is thinking critically about thinking, it is a liberating activity because philosophers confront us with our prejudices and arouse our curiosity without satisfying it.

They show us what they were and how philosophy inspired them to live productive lives. They did not seek disciples but encouraged others to philosophise with them.

We cannot escape from philosophy because we philosophise when we reflect critically on how well we are living.

Philosophy is, therefore, a meditation on who we are and what we can become: it is an eye for an I.

Book Description
This book focuses on the similarities and differences between substance and non-substance addictions. It discusses in detail the mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of substance and non-substance addictions, and addresses selected prospects that will shape future studies on addiction. Addiction is a global problem that costs millions of lives tremendous damage year after year. There are mainly two types of addition: substance addiction (e.g., nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, heroin, stimulants, etc.) and non-substance addiction (e.g., gambling, computer gaming, Internet, etc.). Based on existing evidence, both types of addiction produce negative impacts on individuals’ physical, mental, social and financial well-being, and share certain common mechanisms, which involve a dysfunction of the neural reward system and specific gene transcription factors. However, there are also key differences between these two types of addiction. Covering these aspects systematically, the book will provide researchers and graduate students alike a better understanding of drug and behavioral addictions.
